I think it's Darlington St, the pub on the right is the Silverwell.
its darlington st in the 60s.
That car there on the left, the one with the three part brake light was it a corsair? I smashed into one on my honda 50 in darlinton st I wonder if it was that one??? luckily the chap let me off with a good shouting at..
Not Darlington Street East. All two story terrace houses on the left. Those too large. Think the only pub was the Silverwell. Not another that close. Very unsure of the wherabouts of this picture!!!!!
Gerry the car on the left was a mk1 cortina the car in front of it was either a morris oxford or a austin cambridge
is it not manchester rd to the right of the photo is the end of pickup st and pub at the end its still there although derelict
tony,i can see what you mean about pickup st and the pub but the other buildings dont figure in my memory if it was pickup st then that rd would be manchester rd,but it still looks like darlington st to me .
I was born and brought up in Higher Ince and this doesn't look like Manchester Rd. to me, but I am willing to stand corrected if I am wrong. It does look more like Darlington St. except that it doesn't appear as flat, unless that is due to the camera-angle.
If you look into the right distance there is a Mini car, and just behind that and to the right is another white car on a side road. That side road looks very wide, and it not just a side street but a major junction.
Could that be Smithy Green on Ince Bar?
No, I don't think so, Dennis, but I could be wrong. As I say, I was brought up there and remember Ince before the mass demolition in the late 60s/early 70s and that scene just doesn't look "right" somehow. If it IS in the vicinity of Ince at all, it looks more like the area past Rose Bridge, between Clarington Brook and Warrington Lane.
Hmmmm... but Darlington Street East would have more terraced housing, the 1929 map show long rows of terraces with the odd pub on corners. It certainly is a conundrum!
Also, let me return your good wishes for Christmas, and I hope you and yours have a good one as well. I have recently re-installed my computer and lost your email, if you could just send me an email so that I can add your address back into my contact?
IF the view is from the top of Darlington St. east looking towards town, has as been suggested. There wasn't/isn't a bend in the road, as the photo. appears to show, looking at the houses in the distance. Alsi at first thought I thought it was darlington St. The buildings on the corner of the streets on the right don't match the buildings in Darlington St. east at the time. There was only one pub THE SILVERWELL, whereas this photograph appears to show a pub type building on the corner of every street???
There's a suspicion of a cooling tower, or some tall structure, in the left distance but if you scale that Mini across the road this is nearly a motorway. Can't the street sign or the shop lettering be read on the original?
Looking at the picture magnified. There appears to be a small structure of some kind in the middle of the road, in the distance. Where it looks like another major road goes off to the right. At first I thought it mat be Hindley with Ladies Lane going off to the right, looking from Bridge street, but there is no slope in the road, and I don't think that there where that many buildings on the right. My conclusion is I don't think it is Wigan???
copy the image and mirror it round!
no - bad idea - can't be
could that pub in the middle background be on the corner of chapel lane looking from king st
Road is too wide for anywhere I can think of in Wigan. However, looking at the style of the street signs (I know its grainy when you zoom in) these seem typical of street signs found in Liverpool. The really heavy cast iron type with a pronounced border around the edge
That's a good shout John. If it is Liverpool the tall builing in the distance could be the old Cathedral
Could it be Edge Lane
i lived on manchester rd for a long time, the rd im looking at i swear is warrington rd lower ince, it was a lot wider than manchester rd and this one is wider, hope im right.
i was born in harper st just off darlington st east in 1943 and that photo is never darlington st in memory of man
