lovely pics paul, i used to work in a factory called aldon sportswear, you can see it on this photo on the left its the chaple where the yellow cars are ,i worked there in the mid 70s,the carpet shop then was a small supermarket called A&0 , rathbones was across the road selling pies pasties, bread and cakes mmmm best shop then, the carpet shop came later so not sure of year.a5c
1980s I'm almost sure. We bought a carpet from that carpet shop in the 1980s and I used to go in that supermarket when my daughter was a little girl; she was born in 1981.
the supermarket use 2 b snooker hall when i went school in 1960 me & my mate terry belshaw use 2 go in every night 7 WK ENDS DICKIE BALLS WAS ACROSS RD OUR NORA WAS MANAGERES AT MARKET IN THE 90S
The carpet place was the cinema, next door was the snooker hall, & the Methodist chapel was where I was more or less brought up. I learned to play the organ there and sang in the choir. my aunty Nan lived across the way.
I remember Nora and I remember you, Les, although we only moved to Platt Bridge in 1971; You used to chat to my Mam and Dad, Bob and Tizzie Griffiths...they thought a lot of you. They were happy days, when people of my parent' age could go out for a drink without the pubs being taken over by foul language and bad behaviour.
Where's my old mate Dennis Miller in all these comments? Not like you, Our Dennis, to miss Platt Bridge pics!
I is here Irene. I also remember Dicky Balls, although I am pretty sure a family called Houghton had it when I was a lad.
The noise in there in the 1950's on a Saturday morning was bedlam all the children banging their feet and shouting at the top of their voices.
Can't remember who we were watching though.
Dennis, Bill Houghton was Dickie Balls's son-in-law who helped out in the shop.
Would that be Bill Houghton who had an off-licence in Abram in the 1970s/80s, (wife Muriel)?
Irene, I don't think so, Bill's wife was called Ellen (or Helen) I think.
I am pretty sure it was Ellen... they had a daughter, Gillian whom I went to school with.
I can remember as you walked through the door you had your typical sweet shop... with almost every variety of sweets. But at the back of the shop was a Temperance Bar...
Now brace yourself Irene.... but that Temperance bar was the first bar I ever propped myself up at and my first drink was Root Beer! I soon strayed however, and it was you that plied me with stronger stuff! Well... nearly!
I PLIED YOU!!...Well, I like that! You didn't take much plying, if I remember rightly!
Well... maybe you plied me a bit... okay a little bit... *sigh*... perhaps I did have a fondness for good ale after all. :-D
Dennis, I have sent you an email.
is platt-bridge still rough!
it was wen i lived there.
I remember Scotts having a shop somewhere opposite the supermarket and I think Steven used to work there before buying the shop. Hope he's well - not seen him for years
This is a great photo, I remember target when it was the A & O, my mates wife worked there for a good while. Josie, you said you worked at Aldons, my mam worked there through the 70's etc, Doreen Robie, do you remember her?
