Looking at the damage to the wall it must have been hit at some speed, yet there doesn't seem much damage to the car itself apart from a smashed windscreen and a dented front. I've no idea if anyone was seriously hurt.
If you ever drive up that way you can see where the wall was rebuilt by the "newer" looking mortar joints. The houses across the road were demolished in the 1970s.
Photo taken in the 1950s on a Box Brownie, by a resident.
What a great pic. Well found! But what's in the background? The plume of steam? The pit waste bank?
The plume of steam is from a loco on the WCML.You can make out Standish Junction signal box behind the loco. The slag heap is probably Chisnall Hall colliery at Coppull.Owdbill.
Lancashire Union Line? Unsure where the spoil heap is.
The slag heap in the background will be Chisnall Hall Colliery at Coppull, cars were made with thick metal plate then, unlike today's tin can plate.
Tell you what Cyril, I would much rather run into that wall in a brand new car full of airbags, crumple-zones seatbelt tensioners and all the other features and gizmos they have today than in NA 86 that didnt, regardless of how thick the metalwork was.
Either the cars were very sturdy or the bricklayers weren't up to much
Looking at the smashed windscreen, it's possible that the driver went through it on impact. No seat belts!
Here's some info about the car from Classic GB Cars.
Ford Consul MK1, Production 1951 to 1956
Top speed 72mph, Fuel consumption 26 mpg approx.
0-60mph 28 secs! I'm sure they got that one wrong.
Weight 2,480 lbs, which is just over 1 ton 2 cwt
probably perished mortar and the wall was in effect dry stone
I'd rather not run into a wall at all.
Brilliant! The plume of steam definitely on what is now the WCML. But the alignment of the Crawford, and Standish Junction, doesn't seem to extend to Chisnall Hall Colliery. Maybe Welch Whittle though, a little farther to the south?
That smoke has nothing to do with the bleachworks has it ?
No.
the smoke is from a steam train on the main line
