Does anybody know when Union Bridge was demolished? One source says 1931 but others think it was after that.

Hello John
If you take the road to Pemberton from Robin Retail Park it is between Newtown and Pemberton. The area is still called Union Bridge, although as others say, it has long been demolished.
Hope that helps.
I love old photos like this. My Great Grandparents Emily Brown and Peter Bibby came from Wigan and I often look at the Wigan world website, especially the old photos so that I can imagine how it looked when they lived there. They were both born 1876.
Thanks Tricia, very well described....I know where it was now.
Duncan, I think the bridge was demolished in the 60`s. It was more or less parallel to Alexandra Park. Looking at the photo, as you went under the bridge, Manor Street is on the right which lead to the park gates on Victoria street. Swift chemist used to be on the corner of Ormskirk Rd/Manor Street and was the bus stop for corporation & Ribble buses at this period.
Hi Nadine. Bridge was demolished well before the 60's. They built Plessey's etc. Railway, was a goods line, carrying coal and stone to and from Norley quarry.
Sorry to go on! The railway line ran at the back of Michell Street. Hence, it not being in uniform, or in line with the rest of the streets in Newtown
Nadine, must have been demolished before the 60s or i would remember it!
In the late 1950s/early 1960s I lived only a mile or so up the road, and worked as a driver/deliveryman in the area, and it had certainly gone then.
The bridge was demolished and removed in the 1930's
Can someone tell me when this picture was taken?. I can see my house through the bridge. My Nan used to have this photo in her house too
