after the "entry" that took you through to the backs of School Lane and Butler Street came Spencers, then my grandmother's shop Norcliffes, then Cunliffes, Annie Deans, Adams' and the chemist - Knights. Happy Days!!!!
This is for antar. Ken Cubbins did have a shop at the cherry gardens, and one stall just outside the main doors to the old market. Renees husband Bill Crompton was a friend of Kens and also worked between the shop & the market stall. Before then Bill worked on the central station. which was later torn down. Just opposite was a chemist, which sold gorgous sasparilla, good to call on your way home up scholes, after a days shopping or working.
This is a lovely picture i was born at 24 scholes crossings september 1960.
The shop next to The Bluebell was Livsey's tabaconist's and toy shop, it was run by two brothers, I could never tell them apart. Ken Gubbins shop was on the opposite corner, going down Scholes, a coach ran into in 1951 , it was taking a party to Wembley. One person was killed a lady from Bottling Wood

My grandparents Margaret and William Layland were landlords of the Blue Bell in the early 1950s and my mum Marie lived in the pub with them. Margaret used to enjoy making hotpot for the customers and would invite the policeman who was on duty at Scholes crossing to come into the pub after he had finished. He was said to have also enjoyed her hotpot!
