As its showing one mile to the A58[Liverpool Road],this must be where the A49 slip road comes in from the left. The bridge in the foreground connects Brocstedes Road and Drummers Lane. Spent many happy times playing in this area as a young lad, before the motorway was built of course.
I recall this sction being built and when complete, it cut the journey time to Parkside Colliery by half. We got used to the sight of hares being killed just after it opened, as the road must have cut across their runs.
I remember standing on the bridge at Orrell Mount the day the M6 was opened to see the cars go by.
Does anyone remember when they constructed the bridge at Orrell? The cut for the road went through the Orrell 5ft coal seam which was close to the surface, and security men had to stop people taking the coal as it was undermining the banking!
I remember riding on my Lambretta LD scooter along the motorway when they'd just laid the hardcore. The workmen chased me off! Daft things we do when we are young.(Good fun though!)
