This is the original black & white print that I found last week in a charity shop recently.
Firstly, thanks for the image archive of Appley Bridge. I grew up there and it was a lovely place to spend a childhood.
As I look at this image, it's hard to be certain that it was Appley Bridge. It's possibly a view from Appley Lane South with the chimney on the left being part of the old glue-works that sat on the banks of the canal. The building almost exactly central to the image could then be what became the Inn Between/Allison's Arms/Sam's Bar. The horizon looks similar to Wrightington's Hall Lane woods near the fish ponds.
If it is indeed Appley Bridge, I had no idea that Victorian industrialisation lay behind the village. Before the estates were built, I thought it had been a small hamlet.
Thanks again for taking the time to post the image.
No doubt at all that this is Appley Bridge .... the large tower of the lino works in the distance ( Thomas Whitters) , is the dead give away !
Thank you so much for sharing this post card without you it would be lost forever. Love Wigan World...
