is that the spot peopple would call the "Kek" well, my dad did!
This is taken from the 'Kek' towards the car dealers, used to sell Nissan cars think it was called Mansfield Motors
the garage was opec garages, then springfield park motors, i worked there in 1980 for about 6 months.
Opec garage did sell nissan cars cos my dad bought one from there.A datsun 1200 it was he got.
This is a photograph of what was the HQ of Mansfield Petroleum, Mansfield Motors & Mansfield Construction. It was owned by Mr Les Mansfield who I worked for in the 1970's. The garage/motor company part name was changed to Opec Garages and initially the company were Opel dealers and then were one of the first dealerships to take on Datsun(Nissan)franchise. Eventually the company was taken over by Thames Liquid Fuels (TLF Group)and the Petroleum and Motor businesses were split up. The garage business did in fact become Springfield Park Motors. One of the happiest times of my life working for Mr Mansfield with Martin Worthing and Alf Pearson.
Stuart glad to hear you have good memories of working for Les. I only just remember playing around the back of there, in fact it may have been sold to opec then. Have you any idea of the year it was sold? As my granddad and dad are no longer with us to ask them.
I think this dealership was sold in approx 1982/83, im unsure what went wrong or why it was sold,
soory Stuart 82/83 was when the dealership closed completely, it became springfield park motors in summer 1980 when i was there. i remember putting the rear window stickers in the rear windows of the datsun sunnys, cherrys and bluebirds in summer 1980.
started working here in the late 70s. It was Opec Garage. Martin Worthing was the MD. Norman ran the Paint shop, Phil was the HGV mechanic, Cyril was a Car Mechanic, gay Geoff in the cleaning bay. Sister in the office Stephen in Parts. Was a good place to work. Left to join the Army.
It closed 30th November 1984
I started at Gathurst Service station a few days later I had some great times working there still in contact with a few on Facebook
