I worked in Brooks Bros straight from School. near the underground Pettys
Brilliant Gerry! As is the Millgate pic. Many thanks for posting them.
what a fantastic photo gerry, ide love to be back there in time.
Surely you mean underground toilets, why is it that we Wiganers seem determined to downgrade ourselves
Sorry Dave. We had Pettys in Ince, proper Pettys with Chains My Cousins in Worsley Mesnes Had Toilets the ones with a Handle on the Cistern placed just behind the sit on trumpet. ours had a Cistern high up on the wall with a chain attached. It had a little parrafin lamp in it to stop the pipes from freezing. it were down the yard.. It were easy to find.. it were next to the Midden
I would say that "petty" is a Wigan slang word for the loo, bog, convenience etc and maybe your being a bit petty.
Sorry only joking but after all this is "wiganworld" not windsorworld.
Wigan was a colourful place once with many shops and a vibrant atmosphere , as this photo shows.
Nowt wrong with the word Petty, it originates from the French "petit sal" (pettee sal), meaning small room ;o)
The Sun shade over Brooks Bros? I'll bet I had pulled it out on the morning that this photo was taken, It was my job (among others) Betty Cunliffe (Scholes) was the cashier.
No shortgage of buses in 1968.
