Thank you for bringing such happy memories back to me. my Mum once got me on this platform to visit my brother at Carlisle an hour early and the train was an hour late.
Sorry, but for historical accuracy this cannot be 1963 as this loco was scrapped in 1961.

No. It is definitely platform 7, the north-facing bay. It is a single track, with platform at both sides. Platform seven is the only platform on the station which had such features.
Little used after the direct service to Blackburn ceased, but the early morning stopping train to Preston used this platform. I used to catch it every morning in 1960's. It carried mostly workers to Leyland, and to Preston, and commenced its journey from Wigan, as trains from further afield, and departing at reasonable times would not yet have reached Wigan in time for workers to get to their places of employment. I was always grateful that it used the bay, as the prepped train was there for me to board well before its departure time, and hence a refuge from cold winter weather.
