The worker are too far up the track for a de-railment. Harry, I can see what your looking at, goods coach 3rd from the end. Some rolling stock in those days were all sizes. The train will be stopped at Wigan North West station.

The train in the foreground is not of a type that would normally be seen at Wallgate station. I suspect that this train has been diverted into Wallgate due to an 'incident'. This is borne out by the activity on the main line. The parcels train has been stopped short of North Western so I would suspect something has happened to this train.

The train up on the WCML is in a siding. That siding is still there on the up side today, although very much curtailed.

Stuart - I think this would have been taken before the line was cut at Kirby (1977??)- it's probably a Liverpool Exchange - Manchester train. Or even a service from Southport. They did run longer trains back then - makes my blood boil when there's a platform full of people and a pathetic 2 carriage DMU 'thing' comes into view.

Its more likely a special coming off wcml running round to possibly go on Atherton branch,or vice versa
