Thankyou Gerry.
Aspull starts soon after the railway station, always has done!
John Please write to the Ordnance survey Department because they obviously dont know what they are doing. Tell them the mistake is on SD40/50 Pathfinder map 712 and they will correct it for you.
This is my route to work each morning (Hall Lane), but what did a Toll Gate do? I am guessing something to do with the Railway. Did you have to pay to get through it?
Yes Moz, and there is still a toll-bridge in Warburton, Cheshire. It is 12p to go over it or you can get a 25p day ticket. My husband and I use it quite often. We used to have a left-hand drive American car, so I was in the right-hand passenger seat and so handed the money over, and the man said "Thanyou, MA'AM!", thinking I was American.
I checked this out with an Aspull local today he told me that th boundary changes at exactly the poin shown on this map although ladies lane ceases at the railway bridge and becomes Hall Lane So that you get houses up to number 63 Hall Lane in Hindley. from 65 onwards they are in Aspull. He then told me the bin men from Hindley only empty to number 63 the go back to Hindley... Nuff said..
Well done, Our Gerry!
Sounds like a bargain to me - 12p or 25p - when you look at The Runcorn Ferry at 'Tuppence per person per trip......or per part of per trip'. A Princely toll.
The binmen from Hindley are Wigan council, Aspull comes under Wigan, so there's no council boundary at that point. Aspull starts soon after Hindley railway station....I dont need a map to work that one out!
John Just go and look at the sign in Hall lane take note where it is,
then chat to the locals like I did.... are you one of those people who believes everyone wrong, only you? ....
