I dont remember Amar St Irene, do you? did it become Leaway?

Comment by: irene roberts nee griffiths on 26th July 2010 at 18:27

Yes, and Little Amar St., the next one down, became Amar St without the "little".

Has anyone got old pics of Ladies Lane, think that is in Pemberton ?

Comment by: irene roberts nee griffiths on 27th July 2010 at 16:36

There's a Ladies Lane in Hindley, Helen...don't know of one in Pemberton. Someone will know if there is. The one in Hindley had the old toll-gate.

Comment by: John on 27th July 2010 at 20:18

Your wrong Irene. The Toll-Gate was in Hall Lane, Aspull.

Comment by: Gerry on 28th July 2010 at 09:17

I'll save you Irene, another photo to follow

Comment by: irene roberts nee griffiths on 28th July 2010 at 10:16

If I'm wrong, I'll happily stand corrected, John, but I thought Ladies Lane changed into Hall Lane a lot further up than the toll-gate.

Comment by: Keith on 28th July 2010 at 11:00

Hall Lane starts just after Hindley Railway Station, going towards Aspull!

Comment by: Gerry on 28th July 2010 at 19:43

Oh!no it doesn't ..........see later map

Comment by: irene roberts nee griffiths on 29th July 2010 at 14:30

The toll-gate was exactly opposite what is now Makinson Ave, which is in Hindley. When Hall Lane DOES start, it is Hall Lane, HINDLEY for quite a way before it becomes Hall Lane ASPULL.

Hi Helen, there is a Lady Lane off Clapgate Lane Goose Green, which was part of Pemberton U.D.C.

Comment by: Gerry on 29th July 2010 at 21:23

Sorry Keith you are right Hall lane does start at the railway station but Aspull does not start til number 63 Hall Lane.

Can anyone remember Viaduct Row or St.There were two sets of Terraces. My Grandparents lived there,Tom & Mary Unsworth, also Uncle Bill Unsworth, and Aunt Polly Bamber.Access was via Terraces off Ince Gr.Lane where Whitakers had a shop. They had a new one built next to the Conquering Hero pub

Tom, I remember Viaduct Row, and also the area known as the Viaducts, (we pronounced it "Viredocks"), down Ince Green Lane. It stood in the dip below Ince Parish Church Bridge, and consisted of Raven Street, Farmer Street and part of Ince Green Lane. There was a shop called Albert Hart's and one called Dootson's. I remember Whittaker's new shop opening in The Grove near to the Conquering Hero Pub. As I have put on the Viaduct Row photo, the area seemed almost Dickensian on a foggy Winter's night. Slums?...Yes, but a quaint little piece of history, full of real characters, bulldozed away in the 60s; I'm glad I saw it.
