Freight on the Loop Line, todays freight is hauled by an endless procession of trucks up and down the motorways. Very good set of pics, Brian. Thanks for putting them on.

Belting photo Brian, first Ive seen of the old Iron bridge crossing the canal, but I must beg to differ, that is the rabbit rocks not the slag tip, although the rabbit rocks are composed of the slag detritus from the bottom of the steel cauldrons, the slag tip itself was at the top of Petticoat Lane

Jumping off here into the cut in the 60s was a right of passage for a 12/13 year old.

Is the iron bridge still there minus the track?

Comment by: aitch on 1st June 2010 at 22:26

sorry Andy, but the bridge is long gone, although the rabbit rocks are still in place.

aitch re the slag Tip I always found it between Belle Green Lane and Canal I remember top of Petticoat Lane as Barons wood yard! was Rabbit rocks only from when the material was used for Motorway?I think

I suppose the Rabbit Rocks technically is a slag tip as it was made of tipped slag but if you lived and played in Ince as a child it was, and always has been known as, the Rabbit Rocks. The Slag Tip was at the top of Petticoat lane at the Junction of Hemfield Road.

what a fantastic photo of yestere year, the more you see these magnificent scenes the harder it is to beleive;when walking up and down the loop line{footpath]what thunderd up and down this rail line.the slag tip you talk about was known as the slaggy, what a world away from today, with the tip and all those industrial units, to us kids playing over there was great somewere to explore,it would probaly be fench off today with warning signs, but to us kids then it was great, kids today dont know what there missing it was like the moon, big hills all grey, massive rocks tunnells and turkle rock ;[known to local incers] ahhh memories ...

just another word about rabbit rocks and slaggy ,if you go on work then railways look for train with cars, youl see a steam engine pulling new cars from halewood, its just gone over belle green lane at begining of the rabbit rocks,in the back ground you can see the TURKLE ROCK, it looks massive, i dont think it was that big when we played on it ?
