These are the trolley buses I remember passing outside my Nan's house (525 Atherton Road). Does anyone know the year this was taken? Is the bus in the distance a LUT bus? Is the one nearest the camera in St Helen's colours? A wonderfully evocative photograph.

Great photo Aitch of days gone by. The LUT bus is almost over the Hindley South Railway bridge and Station. This station started life as Strangeways & Hindley, and later became Hindley & Platt Bridge until 1950 when it became Hindley South... Not sure of the year, but my guess would be the early 50s? Note the cats-eyes in the centre of the road.

It was in the mid 50s when the photo was taken, and just over the hill on the right was Mawdesley street where my grandparents lived, but for the life of me, I cant remember the houses shown on the extreme right, level with the trolleybus

In the early 1950s I regularly cycled from Platt Bridge to the Grammar School. I often took a short cut by turning right just over the station bridge and following the footpaths to come out at Park Road opposite the Grammar School. I think the buildings that can be seen on the right were Strangeways Hall farm

Arthur P, The farm you used to pass onyuor journey to School used to be known as Billy Eatocks. His barn seemed to catch fire every few years. I used to use the path coming home from the grammar school in the 40's/50's.

Derek in Aus - I remember Bill Eatock living at Leyland Farm in Lord Street - he was also our milkman - had a horse drawn milk float with milk in churns and also bottled milk with cardboard caps. I'm Arthur Pilkington, started HAGS in September 1950. Before that, I attended St Nat's on Liverpool Road.

Yes the building was part of the farm. Eatocks owned this one, the one in Lord Street, Grange Farm on Park Road next to 126 where I used to live across from the school, and Penny-Gate Farm on Hall lane as well. It was Grandad Billie Eatock who had the old milk float before the war then his son, Harry, took over to be followed by his son William, he died about 3 years ago. The short cut from the Strangeways pub to Park Road was known as The Bankroft. E.T.

NAVIES LUMPER [thats another story]i remember the trolley busses a lovely picture the houses on the right would maybe park road in the distance an d houses on the far left would probebly be Douglas st ..after that it was Yarrow st MAWDSLEY ST NEXT WAS lONGTON ST AND then HARPER ST AT THE OTHER SIDE WAS ORRELL ST BUT I CANT REMEMBER THE LITTLE ST DOWN BY THE STANGEWAYS PUB ALL OF THIS FORMED THE NAVIES lUMP BUT THE FAMOUS TROLLEY BUSSES TRAVELLED ALONG THIS LITTLE PART OFF liverpool road formally STONEY LANE TO AND FROM ST HELENS AND ATHERTON AND ALSO CAN I HAD IT WAS A HALFPENNY ON THE BUS TO THE BIRD ITH HAND ,,JUST 2 STOPS ....

It was Leyland street that ran dowm by Strangeways and its still there but unmarked

DOWN THE SLOPE TO THE LEFT WAS A POND CALLED THE WELL. IT WAS FULL OF BIG PERCH . SPENT MANY A HAPPY DAY FISHING.FOR THEM.ON A SUNNY DAY YOU COULD SEE LOADS OF FISH FROM THE FENCE

Does anyone remember owed joes pen down Leyland st.His real name was David and he was a cripple.He had loads of animals on his pen.His horse was called owed magggie and on Saturdays he used to let us take with a cart.up to Whittles fruit shop on Market st to get old fruit and veg for his animals and to make compost on his midden

Was David the guy with no legs who used to sell the kids white mice in the 60s. Also Billum used to have a pen down there as did Tommy Howard and Billy Wack anyone remember them
