Ken Lawless and Big Stan ( Winstanley?) were the coaches.
Sammy Southern and Bernard Lundy became household names at Orrell. Some notable players missing from this training session were Martin Blan, Bob Cooke and John Smith.
Great days!

Allen, hope you are keeping well.
I have just been recounting some of the memorable times we had at Orrell including the time you got left behind at Furness - legend has it, it took you two days to get home? Also the time we played a Welsh team, Garw Youth on the first team pitch .This had been specially arranged as a current raiser to the first team game who I think were playing a Welsh touring team. Anyway your opposing hooker kept biting in the scrum and the word went out from Bernard Lundy if it happened again then action would be taken which resulted in a mass brawl and the ref abandoned the game much to the dismay of 'The Committee' who were watching the game whilst entertaining their guests.
Fantastic times at a great great club.

Is D Cleary in the photo above the same David Cleary who sadly passed away last year?
If so, this photo can't be 1969 as he would only be about 7 or 8 years of age in 1969.
Unless there were two D Cleary's who played for Orrell?

Comment by: Tony L on 31st October 2022 at 16:23

Rich. The D Cleary in this photo is Dennis Cleary, Dave Cleary's older brother.
Sadly both have died in recent years.

Comment by: Mark on 1st November 2022 at 10:50

That's right Tony L. Dennis was about ten years older than Dave.
