Looking at these walking day pics can anyone tell me when it became the fashion for the girls to be dressed the same ?
In the late 40's erly 50's we all wore white if possible but not the same style...interesting.

I don't think that the dresses are actually all the same for instance you can tell that some sleeves are different.The Sunday School usually chose the material and the colour and then leave it upto the parent for the style.
I can't remember the shop in Wigan where we had to order the headdress

Was it Coleclough and Massey in Market Street?

It was Harts. Coleclough and Massey dealt more with weddings.

p.s.; Sorry Evelyn. you're probably right about Coleclough and Massey for the head-dresses...I'm so thrilled with this site and all the memories that I had read it too quickly for it to sink in.....I was thinking of the dress material when I said it was Hart's.

I love these picture so much,especially the idea of all the walkers stopping the traffic. Our "walk" in my present area have mostly stopped as the local council wants too much money to police the event and close the roads.

I believe I'm on this pic somewhere but I remember Mrs Grundy was in charge of sunday school and she made us were white every year but you could choose any style and we had to have red carnations which mum had to pick up from the school on Saturday morning.

These are family photos, usually with me in, but I cant see me in this. St Peters had different colours of fabric every year and the carnations usually matched the fabric.
