Is the train heading for the tunnel under the M6,Tom?
Didn't realise the platforms were still down as late as 1987.

Bit far up the line for kelbits....Haydock shell depot possibly ?..Train is facing Lodge Lane/warrington road

Gentlemen... the caption does say the train is at the old Ashton station. ;-)

The train is empty bitumin tanks from Kelbits sidings at Golborne, having just run round its train at Ashton before heading back to Springs Branch. The train ( 7E34 Kelbits to Lindsey with 31234 ) usually did not come down to Ashton, but propelled the train back to Springs Branch after unloading at Kelbits.

Is this the platform just across from Haydock racecourse. I remember getting a train to the races in the late Seventies,several specials were laid on over the season.

Its the old Ashton Station Platform. The tree line on the right is along the boundery wall leading on to the school. The train its self is coming from Shell were they were filled. I know because I used to walk that track every day going to shool from Haydock and back

Thanks for putting this picture up Thomas Sutch. I can also testify that this would have been to Shell in Haydock as I used to see them go up there. There is a website called 'Disused Stations' and I expect they would be interested in obtaining this photograph. http://www.disused-stations.org.uk
