Isn't that the Crown on the left and looking up towards the canal bridge?
The terraced houses on the far left facing the incline to the bridge is were i delivered papers in late fifties.the road led to marshall's farm
You could well be right nogger, thanks.
Hi, If that is the crown on the left then where the boy is stood on the right is where my dad had his shoe repairer (cloggers)shop in the yard then he moved onto the main road opposite the pub next to a chip shop I think.
This photograph must have been taken just above were the royal pub use to be.
1945, I delivered bread & cakes to a shop near where the boy is standing. The last bombs dropped by the Zepplin in WW1, dropped in the rear of the Crown and according to the book on the raid, the craters were still visible in the 1970's. E.T.
Just opposite to the horse and cart is the corner of kirkless st where a bomb was dropped in W2
youre right joan it is the crown . i remember youre dads shop in the yard then on the main road next door to griffith,s chippy . How good was that chippy loads better than fatty fosters at boundary.
my childhood days spent in new springs were the best!!! remember the chippy well!
I am the eldest grandson of mr and mrs griffiths, who had griffiths chippy new springs, I have so many happy memories of that time
The main road went slightly to the right before crossing the canal bridge but in later years a new bridge was built and the road straightened out a little. Does anyone remember the Pickfords lorry grounding itself and becoming stuck on the old bridge back in the 1950s ???,it would be around the time of the Wimpey machine falling into the canal at Pendlebury bridge.
Yes I remember the low loader getting stuck on the bridge. Traffic was diverted via the Dairy Pit to get to Aspull. We lived in one of the terraced houses attached to the Bridgewater hotel so we had a birds eye view of the whhole event
Mary, there would be very little traffic back then and didn't bus passengers have to walk over the bridge and catch a bus on the other side. Some of the heavier vehicles were sent via Red Rock as I remember.
Hi, My grandfather and my great grandfather had a general shop 73 / 66 Wigan Road. William and Thomas Haddock. Could be them I wonder?
