That could have been me in the white van with the blue light on top, I worked at Stanley Rd for a spell around that time...;o)

I remember Ellen's shop! Just down the side street was the park... and the 'tramlines'. To the right you can just se the door of another store I remember well, and the garden walls of a little terrace row of houses that I had completely forgotten about! Where the hoarding is to the right was a printing shop.

Is that an LUT bus?

In fact, I posted a photograph of my Uncle George stood outside of Ellen's when it was a tobacconist, it is in the People section under Miller Family - Platt Bridge.

Another brilliant photo, Tom.Been hoping you'd put some more on. I remember Ellen's too, followed by Droney's, Browns wallpaper shop and the row of gardened terraced homes that Dennis mentions. There was also a sweet shop called Josie's.Wish the number one bus was still running.

Dennis, the bus is a St.Helens Corporation. They used to work the No.1 route from St.Helens to Atherton Punch Bowl in conjunction with LUT.

St Helens Corporation buses disappeared on the same day as Wigan Corporation merged into Greater Manchester Transport, the 31st March 1974, LUT got taken over in 1976. In April 1975 this bus would have been run by Merseyside Transport. They obviously did not see the need to 're-brand' as quickly as they would today, image being more important than actually providing a service nowadays.

In the old days, when the trolley buses still had the exclusive on this ourneyj, their route was not along Walthew Lane, but turning left opposite the King Billy on the way from Atherton,, to go past the park and the waterworks, running up to the lights at the top of Platt Bridge. Then across and on to Bamfurlong, Bryn Gates and Ashton-in-Makerfield. A fantastically long journey in those days. I've often wondered how the route came about at all.
