I never realised that the opencast there started as long ago as the late 50's -a good picture. Is that a railway signalbox in the right background? Could it be either Hindley No. 3 where the LYR avoiding line branched off to Pemberton (very tall embankment in the vicinity of Manchester Road), or is it one of the two Amberswood S/Boxes (East or West Jct.'s) where the GCR line connected with the Whelley line? Any thoughts from those with a better directional sense of the area much appreciated. DT

I would say it's Hindley number 3 Dave. The Whelley loop is behind the camera man. Pity it's not a clear shot.
