Those stone slabs that the old men are leaning on were still there in the 50s and 60s when I was a child. One of the shops to the left of the pub was a fishmongers run by a Mrs Pollit of Loch St, She was a friend of my nan Poll Holden who lived behind the shops in Pigot St.

Is this the corner where the KFC is now?

Mick pow willock was at the front of the george i would have thought the kentucky would have been a bit further down

Know where I am now. The old chaps will be standing where the old Machine pub was.
They built the Kentucky on Pow Hillock - they had to move the stone stumps from the old stocks for that and the other shops.

The stones to pow-willock are still there at the side of the tatoo shop

I am lost, what stands now where the pub on the picture is and what stands where the men are leaning?

were the men are leaning on the stone slabs is the bike shop across the road is the new shops leading to the KFC.

Brian, I remember Mrs Pollitt,a very pleasant old lady, but
I can't remember her having a fishmongers. I used to work in the National Insurance office at the top of Fleet Street and I used to shop there during my dinner hour for my fruit and veg.

the old lommera green post office was in the same row as the pub,i thought mrs pollits shop used to be in the bottle neck,then she moved down opposite the queens picture house as did the post office

I used to deliver newspapers for the old gent at the newsagents just to the left of the 'owd chaps' leaning on the stone slabs on White Street in the 1950's. I think his name was 'Mr Sim'. The pub across the road must have been closed because I only remember it as house. There were a couple of children living there (girls) who were very pretty with blonde hair and bright blue eyes but they used to spit on passers by. Wonder where they are now. Further up towards the post office was a pet shop of some description where there were musty old sacks of seeds and beans and peas and stuff on the floor. It was a great smell to us kids where we bought our 'ammunition' for our pea shooters (pigeon peys). Brilliant photo.

evelyn. surprised you did not know mrs pollit had a fish mongers , she was renowned on pemberton for her fish , used to get up very early and go to fleetwood for i she did sell fruit and veg too ,allways wore a silk scarf round her neck if my recollection is right she had a shop where the black bull was going up white street , ,this was after moving from the one facing pannache row , then later moved to facing queens , my brother mated with allan pollit .any one remember pig bin at top of chuch street , people used to put there pillings in for pigs , minnie brimelow used to have pigs where her fruit and veg shop was

fred was the salvation army above the seed shop and did they sell garden ers seeds.

The seed shop was next door to Scotings who had the Post Office and a grocers shop. I think the seed shop was Hills and they had everything for pets. The Salvation Army was above where the crumpet shop was in White Street or downt back lane.

The old bloke leaning over from the back of the stone wall, was my gt. gt. grandfather`s brother Roger Walsh, according to my grandma. He was born c1839.

Yes Fred, the newsagent was Mr. Sim. The Pemberton Bus terminus (60s) was almost outside of Mr Sim's (in White St.) and many people about to get on or just got off a bus would go the newsagents, it was a good spot for business.

In the 1950s the George inn, after that penning tons shoe shop, pollits fish shop etc the end of the row was hills pet shop, and next I think was the post office that's how I remember it.

I remember winstnleys decor shop starting in the stone cottages on the poll hillock fleet St side on the main road after the George inn was penning tons shoe shop pollits fish shop post office hills pet shop.

The Salvation Army was over where the Wheel Tappers shop is now. I lived in Orrell Road near the Leigh Arms renamed the Miners Lamp up to 1950

Does anyone have firm information about stocks going to Standish. Do you know when?
