My Mate Andrew who lives in Leigh says it's the end of Bradshaw gate at the turnpike.
Dennis, the photo was probably taken before 1897. The office of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR)on the right of the street became part of the Great Central after this date. I would think that it was in close proximity to one of the stations.
Buckley's were listed in the 1885 Leigh trades directory as operating from 2 King Street. This places the photo as being taken from Bradshawgate looking towards Railway Road. Both Buckley's and the buildings on the right of Bradshawgate would have been demolished so that today the turnpike crossing is straight through and not "dog legged" as shown in the picture.
My Grandad Joe Bibby was born in Leigh, 1906. He was a coal miner and later moved up to dalton-in-Furness near Barrow where he lived until he died in the late 1970's. If anyone remembers the Bibby family I'd love to hear from you. his father was Peter Bibby and his mother Emily nee Brown, from Pemberton.
