Ron...Great canal pictures from the past. Just left of centre in the background is the car showroom of Williams
of Wigan,Main Ford car dealership,Now a Bathroom shop.
Is that the seven stars pub on the right side of the picture.
Owd Viewer....The photo is looking toward Wigan town centre.
On the right in the distance is where Middleton & Woods used
to be, and now the site of Dominos Pizza. It is Wallgate on the left of the canal, and Pottery Road to the right.
No the Severn Stars pub was about 1/4 mile away near the Seven Stars Bridge. Could be the Golden Lion or Middleton and Woods?
The building on the top right was the trencherfield inn the next two pubs going up wallgate were the bridgewater arms and the golden lion
RON;Can you remember the petrol station situated behind the wall that says h Williams I think it belonged to his car sales buisness
AH if you look under PLACES. WIGAN PIER. there are a couple of photos showing the petrol station/garage.
Scaramouche; thanks for that
Used to load flour from there ,for Thompsons Poolstock (Bake - A- Cake).Hard work.
You've triggered a memory there Thomas, I'd forgotten about Thompsons. Weren't they in an old brick warehouse near Corporation St.? I remember Poolsock lane was chaos at teatime when their wagons used to be backing in. Not that it's much better nowadays. They moved up to new premises in Skelmersdale I seem to recall, but I don't remember when exactly.
Hi, I have just stumbled across this forum post. My family once ran the Trencherfield Inn (Melling family) around 1911 and I've seen reference to it in this post. Does anyone have any information about this pub? In 1921 they're living in Trencherfield House, any information about that house would be appreciated too
