I think this is taken from where the old railway line crossed the canal, on it's way to Central Station or Junction Terrace Station.
Another belter Eddie.
I don't actually remember the bridge Garry as It was removed before I moved into Wigan but you're probably right. It certainly appears to be lined up with Entwistle and Joynt's place.
Garry is right, The stone wall bottom left was adjacent to the bridge, and the canal there was about 2/3 ft deep with a sandy bottom, the kids, learners pool in summer
I understand the green area between the railway bridge parapet and the road bridge was once the site of the Westwood car company, manufacturers of motor vehicles. Perhaps someone can throw some light on this. Mr. Pyke is the first name that springs to mind.
Eddie Westwood Cars were made where Ainscough Metals are now
I have a printed article about Westwood if you would like a copy The premises did not abut the canal IN the 40,s it was Sharps Cooperage
Many thanks for your reply AB, you are obviously more knowledgable about the Wigan area than I ever will be. If I'm being honest, I had a suspicion that the site may well have been where Ainscough metals now are but I was merely attempting to elicit a response. As I've stated previously, it's all about learning. Regards. Eddie.
Eddie - there's a copy somewhere on WW of a b&w aerial pic of Britannia Bridge which shows the whole area - including the Westwood Motors factory, with the name emblazoned on its roof. Sorry I can't locate it at present for you.
Maybe the forthcoming new WW site will make searching for images easier...?
REV I have sent Eddie the view you refer to .shown in a 3 page article in Automobile 1998.
Thanks David, AB e-mailed it to me the other day along with a very interesting article taken from a motoring magazine cataloging the fortunes of the relatively short lived company. I think the photograph is taken from the Aerofilms ' Britain from the air ' collection. Regards.Eddie.
