Joseph Baron's daughter Theresa trained as a pharmacist and in the 1950s had the chemist's shop just round the corner to the left behind the camera on Preston Road where the bus stop for Wigan was.

The village of my youth.

I’m amazed the old wooden panels are still in situ at the sides of the door in the later photo.

Thanks Ron for posting this on my behalf.
I think both buildings look in better shape than they did 123 years ago.
How times have changed, all four properties along that row are now fast food takeaways.

Colin, not wishing to be pedantic but this photo couldn't be from 1901 (123 years ago) as at the time this was Sam Hale's grocer's and butcher's shop, before he moved to the premises in the Market Place opposite the Bull.

Comment by: WN1 Standisher on 16th May 2024 at 17:46

It was before it became Frank Morts electrical shop though

John, your not being pedantic, corrections are always welcome.
However the reference I have is 'Baron's Standish Boot Stores, Preston Road Standish, circa 1900'.
Clearly this view is on Pole Street, not Preston Road, so perhaps the date may also be incorrect. Even I was one year out!

thanks Colin, Sam Hale and family where living at that address on the 1901 census and were still there the following year as St Wilfrid's parish register (available online at "Lancashire Online Parish Clerk Project") sadly records the burial of their infant daughter in 1902 with the family address as 18 Pole Street.
I suppose it's how much leeway saying "circa" gives?

Thanks John, sad but very informative this all adds to the collective history and knowledge.
