But in the twenties, the trams made way for buses and the last tram ran on 28th March 1931.
What an amazing photo, and we would probably never have seen it but for Wigan World. A big thankyou,Keith, for letting us see this, and to Brian and Ron for Wigan World.
An excellent era of local history captured by the camera, an optical illusion I know, but doesn't it seem to be a lot narrower on the photo.
Is this where the Police Station and the Clinic are.
Great photo, well done Keith.
Keith, this is one i've not seen before. Seen pictures of the tracks in place but not under construction. This photo looks like it was taken somewhere near the front of the Globe Inn. Well done. More of the same please
This is a good photo, there are lots of pictures of trams but few "behind-the-scenes" photos of the services that supported them.
Excellent photo Keith, not just because of the tram tracks, but the people and the houses too
Yes ann, the photo would have been taken with the police station on the left and The Globe on the right. The new doctors/clinic is where the old council office, latterly clinic used to be, you can just see the tallest building up the street on the left hand side that is where it is now. Great photo this is Keith.
My grandparents lived opposite the White duck at 88 High St from 1930's up until it's demolition in 1970 when my nan moved to Grove place. my grandad died in 1952. They were John and Mary Linford and had a daughter called Margaret, (my mother).
A bit morbid really but the tram line ran behind the council offices on the High Street and more than one poor soul committed suicide on that line.
Quite incredible how narrow the road was outside the White Duck with those long gone terraced houses on the right hand side.
I think the line Linma refers to if it was behind the Council Offices on the High Street was the Mineral Railway Line?
