Another set of interesting photos Ron, it is hard for the youth of today to realise how many coal mines were once in this area. I worked in the mines for 4 years, after school, but the pit brow ladies on the screens had gone.

Aubrey. They were still there at the Maypole, 1949/50. They were the "Salt of the Earth". True ladies. Although the work was arduous that they had to undertake, they were always happy, and contented with their lot. They always got on very well with the other girls'.

A better use of phraseology would have been. "They always got on very well with each other" The only other females working there, were working in the canteen. They were all men, in the pit office.

When I started work at Park Collieries (Stones) in 1949 there were pit brow girls working there and as far as I know they were still there when the pit closed in 1960
