It's a play on words SB. Many of us Wiganers 'drop our haitces'. House is often pronounced owse etc.

But, when some folk try to be posh ie putting on airs and graces, they put a haitch where there isn't one.

As with Irene's hegg butties.

In short, she's impersonating someone who is trying to be posh, but failing comically.

You're welcome, Southern Belle. There are a few other quotes of people trying to be posh. I can't remember at the moment, but I think one had a lady who dropped the common 'pratus' (potatoes) into a conversation.

Dostaf, my Auntie Mary was a past master at trying to be posh and getting it wrong! At Walking Day, (Our new lady Southern Belle will wonder what that is too!), she used to "put it on" when the vicar passed by but got her aitches in the wrong places, and it would come out, "Oh, 'ello Vicar, hisn't it 'ot?", and then to his wife, "Hit's very naice to see you...hisn't it warm?". Then she would spot some high-up Church Lady's little lad "leading out" carrying a beribboned crook, and would say to my Mam, "'Ey-up, Ah thowt yon mon 'ud a't t'be a shepherd!"

I've heard loads of them, Irene. But can't remember specific ones.

You should start a 'Hegg Butties' thread and form a collection.

My Mother fell as she got off the bus a man helped her up.
She told him in her posh voice. thenk you Hi was getting off the buas and I slored, she said he was a distinguished gentleman, I asked her how do you know that?? she said he had grey sideboards,

thenk = thank
Hi = I
buas = bus
slored = slurred or slipped
sideboards = sideburns

The things she came out with,Bless her, we used to laugh for weeks at some of them.
