Hey up Brian. The lads name is Shaheen Jafargholi. He covered Smokie Robinson's 'Who's Lovin You' on Britain's Got Talent.
His new release is a double A-side single of 'Last Train Home' & 'Hip Teens.' The latter being a cover of soul group Frank Popp's 2007 hit 'Hip Teens (Don't Wear Blue Jeans)'.
His new album, 'When I come of age,' includes his own material and rare 60's soul covers.

An interesting and thought provoking article from today's Guardian no less, that compares one of our scenes most memorable tunes with one of Shakespeare's sonnets.
Well worth a read.
The final three records traditionally played at Wigan Casino's northern soul all-nighters were known as the Three Before Eight, and fittingly, for the closing notes of the night, all three were concerned with the passing of time. The sequence opened with Time Will Pass You By by Tobi
Legend, followed with Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe, and ended with I'm On My Way by Dean Parrish.
It's the Tobi Legend track I have always loved most. It is somehow undiluted by the schmaltz of Radcliffe's track, or the hey-ho-on-we-go of Parrish's number, and instead is simply a song about seeing the preciousness of life, about trying to live our lives better and brighter.
Legend was born Bessie Grace Upton in Alabama, the daughter of the gospel singer Emma Washington. She began her career in Detroit, more commonly recording as Tobi Lark, and singing backing vocals for artists such as BB King and Wilson Pickett, Duke Ellington, Ben E King and Cannonball Adderley. This track was released in 1968, and written by the English-born engineer John Rhys, but it did little commercially until it was picked up by northern soul clubs in Britain. Earlier this week, I found a podcast in which Rhys talks about writing the song. "I didn't even know it had been released until 1982," he laughs, detailing the
history of Time Will Pass You By's composition and recording before it was seemingly lost. "After that, I don't know what happened," Rhys says, "but somehow it got to England … and it was successful. So thank you,
mother country … Thank you northern soul, so much."
Its verses cut a melancholy figure, its opening lines reflecting on the steady turn of the world: "Passing seasons ever fade away/ Into misty clouds of autumn grey/ As I sit here looking at the street/ Little figures, quickly moving feet." And then in zaps the chorus, a
remonstration of sorts, or a call to arms: "Life is just a precious minute baby," it yells. "Open up your eyes and see it baby/ Give yourself a better chance/ Because time will pass you/ Right on by."
Like many pop songs, there's something of the sonnet about Time Will Pass You By; it's there in the song's intention of course, but there is something about Legend's track that has always reminded me specifically of Shakespeare's Sonnet 60. Legend's second verse, "I'm just a pebble on the beach and I sit and wonder why/ Little people running around/ Never knowing why," for example, seems to echo Shakespeare's lines: "Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore/ So do our minutes hasten to their end;/ Each changing place with that which goes before,/ In sequent
toil all forwards do contend."
Sonnet 60 is itself a song, of sorts, about life's "precious minute".
Shakespeare was writing at the end of the 16th century, in an age when time had become increasingly mechanised, its measurements more accurate, and for the first time, clocks began to have minute hands – the sonnet's name is thought to reference the number of seconds in a minute. Time,
perhaps, never seemed to pass by so keenly.
Legend's song also came at the end of a decade, written over a three-year stretch in which the magnitude of events meant that life perhaps seemed to gather speed – Vietnam, the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, riots in LA, New York and, of course, Detroit. In 1968, the year of this song's release, ours was a world trying to reorder itself, the civil rights movement was under way in the US, there were protests across Europe, and Apollo 8 allowed us to see Earth in its entirety from space. "This big old world is spinning like a top," Legend sings, "Come on help me now and make it stop."
But Legend offers the sonneteer's age-old remedy: "All you have to do is live for now," she sings, "Come along with me I'll show you how." And how softly reassurance turns into seduction: "Take my hand I'll show you how to live/ Why wait until tomorrow?"

This is a band formed in the mid 90s,so just see what you think.I like the sound, they are thought to be revivalist capturing the essence of soul of the 60s to mid 70s.No digital recording equipment only analogue, and limited instruments only those used in the 60s to mid 70s.Hope you enjoy

Jem: Good call on Sharon Jones And The Dap Kings. Been listening to them for a while now. There was a TV documentary featuring the Dap-Kings last year showing the equipment they use and as you stated, it's all analogue. If I can find it I'll post it up.
Going to double up on my usual 3 tonight seeing I've been neglecting the list a bit.
This time all taken off the CD; Northern Soul - The Collectors Choice.
Timmie Williams - Competition
Mac Staten - There She Goes
Chuck Holiday - Just Can't Trust Nobody
Freddie Butler - Save Your Love For Me
Ruby - Feminine Ingenuity
Patrinell Staten - I Let A Good Man Go

Jem:
Remembered the docu but it wasn't Sharon Jones. It was Mark Ronson talking about Amy Whinehouse and her Back To Black album which featured the Dap-Tones as her backing band.
Unfortunately it's been removed for 'legal reasons' as is usually the case.

Jem: Congratulations on your new addition mate!
Tony: Hope you have a good one at the Weekender mate, it's been well publicised on the soul forums so it looks like there'll be plenty in attendance.
Thought I'd post this one up on it's own.
It's a fantastic mid tempo haunting tune that brings shivers down my spine every time I hear it.
There's some snippets of unseen footage from the Casino to accompany it, as well as some more from a music video that escapes me at the moment.
Enjoy...

Cracked it Bri, your a jem, well not quite ok Jem, thats right Bri Stick to my daytime job. Well yours truly on the left with my mate Karl Hayes from Preston, he flew back from watching England at cricket that night in Adelaide for the Saturday allnighter. This club called the Gaelic club in Sydney, top venue, we all nicknamed it Little Wigan because of the balcony over looking the dance floor. Everyone here all brits now living in Aus,they flew from Perth, Queensland, Adelaide,Melbourne and even New Zealand. It was a fantastic weekend, the dj you kindly put on for me Bri originally from North Wales, all the djs ex brits and got top sounds. Everyone I spoke to said Wigan casino and the northern soul scene, the best years of their lives and would never forget the wonderful memories. The girl in the dance shot was taking photos all night, brilliant, I will put some more on later. It really is hard to belive that 12000 miles away from the UK here we are some 37 years later for me all together again, may it last a 100 years.
Cheers

Jem, what a fantastic job you have done. Made so many happy faces, even the ones who knew nothing about our northern soul and the most famous dance club in the world. The music will live on well beyond our time, it never leaves your heart and will be danced to by me and others all the way to the pearly gates and the casino in the sky. We should have this made Northern soul no.3 a sticky. Thanks also to Bri Jolley and others for their inpeccable knowledge of the music and memories.

Hiya Jem,
This thread is fantastic. Just like having your own N Soul juke box in the living room.
Sorry for the gap in the chat. I was indisposed for a while around 22 jan and was out the game, but i'm reet now.
I try to reserve ''Can't get next to you'' for special occasions, these days, but i've developed a bad habit of doin' ''heaven must have sent you'' on the mandolin when I'm kaylied. Its pretty painful listening , but that's never stopped me and a bunch of scouse women thought it was brill on Paddy's Day which gave me (probably false) hope.
Any road keep up the good work Jem, Hope its all good with you pal.

So that's it without the last bracket ] when this is added it will be reet hopefully so have a go but leave it if it is'nt right so i can see what's wrong with it.go on don't be friky its the only way you will learn it.
If you don't get it right you can do what Brenda Holloway sings here You Can Cry On My Shoulder. Here is Marvin Gaye And Kim Weston with there version of Baby I Need Your Loving. When I get In tonight I'll be doing what this song says The Temptations Just One Last Look.and hope you've cracked it.

Open the Door to Your Heart
Darrell Banks.
I think I have this in the attic with about 600 other singles and nowt to play 'em on. The flip side is Our Love is in the Pocket, on Stateside,I think.
Is it awreet to just put the odd one on? I realise that I'm probably duplicating a record already listed , but its not a hangin' offence, I hope, just breach of ww etiquette, maybe.

I never knew that about Darrell Banks. Mind you I don't know much about a lot of the N. Soul performers.
I listened that Al Kent instrumental - You got to pay the Price. I have a vocal version of it somewhere on a single by...mmm, I think her name's Gloria Taylor. It was amongst a huge box of singles I came across in a Newquay post office. I bought 18 of them ( records , not post offices) and had no spending money left for most of the weeks holiday in July '75.... what else eas amongst them?... I think Real Humdinger on red ric-tic(?) and ''The Cheater '' by ..can't remember.
Doh! just clicked on the Gloria Taylor you posted above, and ther she was doin' You got to....

''So you may as well give me them record's out your loft, Ha''.
Jem
, You can have all the collection on a permanent loan. When I fall on hard times, I'll ask for them back. I know they'll have good home. Let us know if tha wants 'em.
I just listened to that Jackie Edwards 'some body help me now'. It may be sacreligeous to ask this of a N Souler, but do you think that \stevie winwood's version isn't as good ? agghh, what's it matter any way! . great song mon.

Psychedelic Soul
Saxie Russell.
I prefer the vocal version of this next one but Lonnie Mac's guitar is mean and makes up for it. Sound like somebody's clogg-dancin' all way through, too. Can't find the vocal version on YT.
James Brown and The Famous Flames.

Used to love this next one, but 35 years after I last heard it, I'm not so sure. It'll always remind me of a fantastic dancer who was at the Cas on Sunday nights. A kid from Golborne , I think, always got up for this. He had a really fit sister.
I hope he's still dancin' and she's the same. This one's for them, wherever they may be.

That sax in 'You ought to be in Heaven' is a bit special, eh.
I remember rushing home with the single, then ruining it with a crappy stylus on a old turntable. 2nd time I played it, just sounded like a wireless not tuned to t'station.
The brass section on this next one's pretty neat as well.

Fantastic track thatfrom Marvin Gaye. Not heard it for yonks ; some riffs reminiscent of 'IHITTG', must be about '69 I guess.
I'll fight me saddle sores and am lookin' forward to the bike ride and the ten pubs.
Pity I've got to go a wedding reception straight after..... What's the bettin' I'll be in lumber.
Hey ho, who's worried.. on Okeh from 1926: Bertha 'Chippy' Hill.

Hey Up Jem , Maybe I've forgotten, but I don't recall the name James Emanuel Lasky, That's a great track you posted -- a bit reminiscent of the Tempts I wish it would rain, maybe-- and the lad JEL has a great voice. I listened a couple of his others on youtube. He should lead a band called the Detroit Belters.
Gravel rash knee and slightly chipped elbow from the bike ride should look tremendous on the beach at Pisolivadi this weekend.
Speakin of good voices, this mon's not bad:
I can't stand to go on without you Early Drifters
and niether's this, Garnett Mimms:
Cry Baby
..and when I saw that title Ain't gonna give you up I thought of this:
Never gonna...
