Not the so called Wigan Pier. Another one.
I wonder where it was.

Not seen that pic before,dostaf.
At the top right hand corner the writing on the shed looks like, "freight &".
Good pic

It was prompted by this thread of Mache's, Winder.

The wagon looks like it has just dropped through the structure , and falling onto the lorry.
I thought it would be more feasible for the tippler to work with the wagon lengthways, and the lorry alongside.

It does look rather a primitive method, Aiflanc.
Similarly the Crooke Tippler
Mind you, the end-opening coal trucks seemed to be favoured for a long time.
The diagonal stripe indicates the 'door end'
Standish

The 16 ton steel mineral wagon gradually eradicated the familiar wooden bodied coal wagon completely and continued in regular use all over the railway system until 1987

Good pics dostaf, especially the one from that "winder" fella
I seem to remember Art, telling someone that, at the Crooke Wagon Tip, the steel pins that held the door in place where replaced by thin wooden pegs, when the wagon was in place for tipping.
This meant that when the wagon was "tipped up" the wooden pegs would break, allowing the coal to fall into the barge.
You learn summat every day!

Nice finds, Mache.
A reminder that Wigan Coal And Iron were widespread and the pic of the Walker lorry may not necessarily have been in, or close to, Wigan.
Happen the lolly sticks didn't break?

Looks like the coal wagon has been derailed to me,

Dostaf Interesting thread, and the Crooke tippler picture makes it clearer ,thank you.
When I was working the firm I worked for made tippler rings for tippler machines , but I think these were for smaller wagons,in quarries and clay pits and also pit tubs..

You're welcome, Aiflanc.
I can't say I've ever seen a tippler in operation and I now wonder how gently operated. By that, I mean if they went with a hell of a bang or ran quite smoothly with springs and counterweights etc.

That has me thinking again about the 'Wigan Pier' one in regard to that pic of the Preston pic.
I was wondering how far around the wheels the end of the tracks 'curled'.
Bentlegs suggests the Preston wagon could have derailed. If that's the case the 'curl' would not have been above the wheel centre, as it would have snagged the axle.
I had thought that if the door hadnt opened as the thing rocked, the whole wagon would have tipped over into a standing on it's end type position, whilst still being retained by the rails.
Will look for a pic of the original 'Wigan Pier'. The current one is a none working reproduction which I think was made by students at Wigan & Leigh College in the eighties.

Sad to see the replica in such a state. Despite my subscribing to the fact that it isn't the site of 'Wigan Pier'.
Can you subscribe to a fact?
Nice link, Mache.

its possible the lorry's tipper as hit the right hand bridge supprt bringing it down.that kind of truck could only have been local as all coal was long distance rail in those days.wigan coal and irons wagons could be found in any part of the uk from penzance to wick before 1930's,but not its trucks.

Caption suggests it's from a Walker publicity item.
EK (numberplate prefix) was local registration, so it may have been closer to home.

Don't get your "Tippler" mixed up with a "Tipper"
A Tippler turns the wagon/tub over in a 360 degree roll. Depositing into a bunker
A Tipper upends the wagon to 45 degrees, & snaps the temporary wooden pegs in the end gate ( usual for loading barges etc).. Crooke Tip Style

The yellow painted one is similar to the type of rings we made ,but in cast iron, about 12 ft in diameter.
