This commercial trend of today is so unlike the hallowe'en of the 1940/50s. Then, there were no pumpkins, trick or treat or elaborate costumes. Simple things sufficed such as apple bobbing both in a bowl of water or hanging in rows on string tied to a length of clothes line. Turnips were hollowed out to make the masks. If turnips couldn't be afforded an empty jam jar with a candle.
I see Tesco are to stop using 'best before dates' on many items in an attempt to reduce food waste
