Hello everyone. I have just joined wiganworld and noticed the references to our lady's convent, greenfield house. My name is Francis Charters and I was born in Liverpool. I was orphaned in 1954 and along with my older sister elizabeth(Betty) and my younger brother Daniel was placed in the convent. We were there for a couple of years and then fostered out to a couple of people in West derby, Liverpool. My memories of the convent are all bad, I have nothing good to say about the place or the so called Christian nuns who ran it.Everything I read on the website is correct. We children were beaten for the slighest thing and suffered as a cosequenc later on in life. I never got over the abuse, either dished out to other children (and being made to watch)or on the recieving end myself. My sister Betty suffered claustiphobia all her life as a result of being locked up in a dark cuboard by one of the nuns. I well remember sister Mary Clare as being particuarly vindictive towards some children including myself. We spent many hours on our knees praying either in the chaple or in the common room, and I have suffered with my knees for many a year. I used to see my sister and may younger brother at mealtimes and when Danny and I went to bed in the dormitory as Betty was kept in the girls part of the convent. I remember going to Hoylake on holiday and it was one of the few time that children were fairly safe as other people were around and the nuns did not want enyone to see us being abused. Ther was also a party once per year at the American air base at Burtonwood , near Warrington but only so many children could go as there was not enough room for all the children from all the orphanages in that part of Lancashire. I could say a lot more but it still upsets me to this day that anyone could treat children in this way. I have poor memory for people whowere in the home , maybe this is down to traumer , but maybe someone out ther remembers me or my sister and brother. I feel sad at thes memories but at the same time I feel that a weight has been lifted of my shoulder . Good luck to all and God bless to those people who were in the home.
