If you can remember Peter,there were no water problems on the faces either side of C9,because C9 was then acting as the sump for the water and was allowed to fill up.However as the faces to each side were worked we had to implement the "Precautions against Inrushes" Regulations and observe a "40 yd cautionary zone" within which we had to keep the water level in C9 below us and drill boreholes to the side and front of the advancing face.
The water was indeed very caustic,there was all sorts of stuff in it.The dip you refer to was a succession of small faults which troubled the face throughout it's life and provided a ready made route for the water from the sandstone above.I seem to remember the water was sampled by the scientific branch regularly.
