The Northern part of our island, then called Caledonia, was inhabited by Picts. The Scots (Scotti) were then still in Hibernia (as Ireland was then called).

They had not yet crossed to our island, and mixed with Picts and Viking and other Norse to create what we now call Scots.

So, paradoxically, if he were a Scot, then he would be Irish.
