The pension tax you mention, which would help pay for the Covid-19 costs, would only affect the pensions of the higher rate tax payers, which starts at £50,271 per year, or £966 a week.

I don't think that any of the proposed, and previously proposed schemes will fix the Social Care situation, and the problem is the perfect storm of much higher population numbers (EU immigration), along with much higher numbers of people living to an increasing older age, the human body maybe living longer, but it is as though the human brain isn't, hence the large number of people with dementia.

The only solution I can think of is too tax people throughout their working lives towards the costs of social care in their retirement, so instead of that the increase in National Insurance by 1.25% from next April, and which from 2023 will be called the Health and Social Care Levy, should be increased to something like 5% and let people keep their houses.

HS1 was different in that it was an extension to the Channel Tunnel, because on the continent the Eurostar trains were travelling at 186mph on high speed lines in France, but over here that was down to 70mph on the congested Southern Region rail network, and HS1 is only 67 miles long.

As part of last week's announcements the existing line from St Pancras in London, to Leeds, is to be upgraded and electrified to Leeds, at present it is only electrified as far as Corby, and that line once went on to Manchester, so that section through the Peak District (the monsall trail) could be reopened as another route to London.
