It isn't only some posh people. I was on holiday with a close friend of mine quite a number of years ago and three young blokes from Birmingham asked us where we were from. I told them that we were from Wigan. After hearing that, they started to smirk and try and ridicule Wigan.
By the way, at the time, I lived in Standish. But, never dreamed of saying that I was from Standish. I grew up in Wigan and so always consider myself a Wiganer; no matter where I am and no matter which person I am speaking to.
Relating to your words: Didn't some analyst of human character state that certain working-class people gathering sudden wealth also quickly dismissed their background and adopted totally different morals and attitudes?
I believe the words 'new money' were associated to these types of people.
These might be the Standish people you are referring to.
I take Standish people the same way as I take everyone else, which basically comes down to this: some are very pleasant and I get on well with them and some are unpleasant and I try to ignore them.
