Workhouse Frog Lane

what became of this imposing , austere building. I remember as an apprentice at Walmsleys walking past the place going to and from work , feeling very intimidated by what it represented. It had closed by the 1960s but the memories endured through stories in working class families/

I often wonder what dark stories that old workhouse could have told? Should it have been kept or was it better to let it be replaced ?

Don't know if this thread still going. Yeh thowd work were imposing and dark and I walked past it everyday on my way to work at Walmsleys. But I think you should know not all treatment were harsh all the time. My dad worked there in 1930s as a male ward dogsbody. His job was to look after the tramps that turned up. He had to help bathe them, re-clothe them and get rid of their old flee infested clothes. We used to get tramps turning up at home asking for mi dad and looking for help and nobody went away empty handed.

Yes, I can recall when tramps turned up at the back door to get a meal.
