Wigan Observer and The British Newspaper Archive

Started by: jim.orrell (12)

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I've also posted it on the "Wigan Family & Local History Society" section.

I suppose many of you will have heard of The British Newspaper Archive.
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/
I've been waiting to see the Wigan Observer archived but it is still not scheduled yet.

It seems that they have a voting system for what is done next.

If you want to add your vote, just free register:
https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/account/register
You are allowed 10 votes, max 3 per newspaper.

These links take you to the relevant pages.

If you know of any other titles for the Wigan area, you could add them too.

You do need a subscription to view them, a little expensive in my mind, but as with all these subscription things probably cheap if you consider travel costs and time it would otherwise take.

BUT, if you have access to a FindMyPast subscription it is included, not sure if there is a delay or displayed differently.

Cheers

that's good to know jim. I recently went to the Wigan museum to trawl through old Observers and want to go again. it would be so much easier to have it online for those of us far away.

Tonker, yes I agree, quite expensive for the odd lookup, but don't forget if you know someone with a FindMyPast subscription I'm sure you could look over their shoulder.

N.B. You can still place a vote for free.

Jim, have you had a look on the Wallgate thread on People. There are two Wallgate threads actually. Priceless.

at April 2020 Wigan Observer is online and searchable (not the best OCR) to around 1918.

You can still go to (see original post fordetails)
http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/

and place your vote, for free, and for more years!
