Temperance bars in Wigan (and district)

I know one's opened at Botany Bay, Chorley, but does anybody remember any in Wigan and, if so, when did the last one close

There was one in Darlington Street East.

There was one on Manchester road just past Wray st.. named MOLLEY'S.

That was Molly Hammond's I think. Wigan had a couple back in the 1800s and if you walk along the long path furthest from the gates at Wigan Cemetery Lower Ince, with the offices in about your 10 O'clock position, there is the grave to a chap who ran a similar establishment. Full of the old fashion exhortations to abstinence.

I was told by my wife's mother that there used to be a temperance bar at junction of Leigh rd & Atherton rd on the left going toward Atherton next to what was the ""BETHEL"" that's what I was told!

Yes, the name of that temperance bar, in the 1960s, was Ormerods, I remember they had a daughter named Irene, I think they had family connections with Edward Thomas Ormerod, the chap that invented and patented a detaching hook for the prevention of accidents from over-winding in mine shafts, about 1867.

There was another temperance bar in Hindley Green next door to St. John's School - Miss. Pyes (Florrie),I helped out there.

Did that later become a sweet shop grandmas? I have memories of the building being there but not open.

Loved Cardwells shop would take empty bottles back for the penny deposit, Not too bad grandmas how are you?

We are all fine beep just busy with grandchildren it is a 'Wigan Christmas' this year so we have 15 or so for dinner!!

Those where the days when you got the deposit back on bottles, happy days when we had concerts on your table and I sang (very badly) for your lovely dad, poor soul what a lot he had to put up with.

I also remember when you had two rabbits in the shed (well there were two at the beginning) but they soon multiplied

There was a Temperance Bar in Sefton Road, Orrell opposite the Majestic Cinema.

I went past there today Dennis and it looks like its turned into a launderette.
Cinema's disappeared too

Does anyone remember John Boltons bar inScholes near Warrington Lane . Was that a temperaenc bar?

Dicky Balls Platt Bridge many years ago.He was also the Manager of the Rex Cinema Hindley!

there was one opposite silverwell pub it was bowds on corner of little cambridge st and one abit higher up darlington st east it is now a monumental masons but you can just make it out on front over window

Lance Lucas's on Manchester Road,Ince.Remember there being one in Rodney Street in Wigan ( near to where Crumbs cafe is now.)Used to call in after going to Wigan baths in Millgate.

There was Gores opposite the Bird 'th Hand on Wigan Rd in Hindley.They moved down to Atherton Rd and opened a paper shop.I do not know if they still have the shop,but it is still called Gores.They were very nice people.I still have two penknives I bought in their shop for 20p each,marked Empire made and are excellent quality.I used one in my job as an electrician for years.Only use them now to open letters.Bob their son used to deliver the papers on his bike for years ,he must have been one of the longest serving paper lads in the country.Used to love the root beer in the Temp and the Horlicks tablets which came in a little packet like Rennies.
