Ashfield House Standish late 50's info

Was Ashfield House in Standish (which is now I believe a resteraunt) in the late 50's onwards an annex to wigan hospital ,I seem to remember as a young lad going there for
eye treatment, but my mate says it must have been somewhere else.

I was a typist at Ashfield House in the 60's. Upstairs were the Council offices and downstairs was the school dentist, the baby clinic and ante-natal classes, so the chances are that is where you went for eye treatment.

It was also a base for Lancs County Ambulance Service, 'til '68, when the new station was built..(now closed, I believe)...I worked there from '69

I think it might belong to Dave Whelan!

Blackrod you are right......I had a lot of dental work done there.....sat in the chair at the big bay window .....I can still smell the disinfectant to this day......very traumatic.....

I remember it too Alan.....horrible stuff.....had a lot of dental work done before we left for Australia....those damn gob stoppers....I had too many of them.....got a great dentist here.....

I can still smell the gas in the dentist! Part of the ground floor was leased to Lancashire County Council who provided the health cover for schools and young mums/babies. Nurse Hargreaves used to weigh the babies and give out concentrated NHS orange juice is medicine-sized bottles. The remainder of the ground floor was used for social functions (I had my wedding reception there in 1970)while Standish Urban District Council (including linma)used the first floor.

I wonder if I booked your wedding reception for you oldjourno, we in the Clerks department did that.

I thought Ashfield House was a retirement Convent for Notre Dame around 1960's I seem to remeber visiting my Aunt there a ntre Dame Nun please correct me if I am wrong

I worked at Ashfield House in the 60's Elizabeth but it belonged to Standish UDC, nothing to do with a Convent.

I thought it was part of the estate belonging to Thomas Standish, which was bought by Whelco Holdings in 2004.
Wigan Council held leases on some parts of his estate.

The restaurant is owned by Mel Street a close confidant of Dave Whelan.

That's the restaurant. What about the freehold property?

The planning application for housing listed Mel Street as the land owner.

I didn't know planning applications show the identity of landowners?

My dad worked at Ashfield House from May 1960 until mid-1980s. Never any connection with the Notre Dame convent. LCC leased rooms downstairs and after local government re-organisation it was used by Wigan Tech admin department.

Mel Street owns all Ashfield House and restaurant. Don't believe DW had it at any time.

The eye clinic was there in the 80's too.

When Ashfield House was owned by Kevin Barker it was the best resteraunt in this area by a mile.

The Notre Dame convent was in Roundmoor Road which is on the opposite side of Wigan Road from Ashfield House. The nuns are no longer there.
