Nesting

Started by: Wiganread (14)

Times have changed, I know. But Birdnesting was once very, very, popular being a hobby that was talked about everywhere at school in the playground and at home. It's true that protecting birds is a very good measure. Yet Birdnesting for many people in Wigan is an inescapable and very magical part of childhood. I once got a Dunnocks' and said it was a Winchat. I also got a Blackys' and said it was a Ring Ousel. Birdnesting brings back so many good memories and although today it is out of the question it was a hobby loads of lads in Wigan will understand.

We called it "egging" . Owd'uns called it "Brid Neezin"!
"Ast' bin t' brid neezin agen, thee"?

You Wiganers won't understand that language!

I heard it called a "neest" too.
But I could never understand why a person would call a 'rat' a "ret"?
It's just as easy to say it correctly.

When I was little and my mum would take me to see "uncle Harry". As we were leaving, he always asked "duss'wanta cabbich"? Then he'd pull two big ones off his plot. They were them dark green ones what's good for you.
Tragic, to me, as I hated dark green cabbich. Still do, actually!

Two weeks ago I built two six foot gate pos'es!

We also call a mouse or insect a 'moggie' - I'm told that (especially in Liverpool) a moggie is a cat! Strange language for any migrant wishing to grasp an understanding of English.

Berylh now illegal it was when you pinched the eggs from the nest and pieced the egg and got rid of the yolk and you had a collection of eggs in a drawer Kids then did not know what harm they were doing back then
