Anyone interested in an excellent novel linked with Wigan should check out ‘Rose’ by Martin Cruz Smith. He is typically identified as a thriller writer, but ‘Rose’ is a kind of love story with a bit of investigative adventure thrown in. Cruz Smith came to Wigan to research our history and find his inspiration. Accordingly there are many references to landmarks and events, all assembled with artistic license to provide a very good story, particularly for Wiganers.
