When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time in Ashton Library.

It had an absolutely gorgeous lecture theatre.

Council would never give permission for it to be used! A couple of lectures by Professors from Manchester University, which I had a hand in arranging, were meant for Ashton, but had to be hosted at Wigan Tech.

Eventually, council closed lecture theatre, "due to lack of use"!

Nowt changes then, when it comes to how they treat people.

Go to my local library every three weeks, I would be lost without a book.

i use my library at least every fornight but nowadays i find they have a better selection on their ebooks than hard copies. Computers have taken over much of the space in my local library although the childrens dept seems well supported.

I can afford to buy books now.

When I was a kid, I could not afford to buy books. Also, they were in short supply: paper for them had been severely rationed post WW2.

All the 'Just William' stories, all the books on camping, woodcraft and survival. The stories of the explorers: La Salle of The Mississippi and such like. The science texts. The books which influenced my first career choice (engineering) I even recall them getting me an 'inter-library loan', all the way from Texas!

None of these, am I likely to have had access to without the Carnegie Library, at Ashton in Makerfield!

If they close it, I think that they should be made to reimburse the Carnegie Endowment, so that its benefit can be re-circulated to benefit those who would appreciate it.
