knitting

How many of us still enjoy Handknitting.The birth of twin granddaughters 2 years ago got me back into it after many years and I'm really enjoying it.

Vera I do. If you look on the hobbies board you will see how much I enjoy. Find it much more satisfying than TV. Art and craft.

Very..I used to do a lot of knitting,but it started making me uptight,but I love crocheting..plus it grow quickerlike Anne says art and craft is much better than the goggle box..and I love painting.

I am currently making a Arran Cardie for my 8 yr old granddaaughter

I don't do as much as I used to, but recently bought wool for an Arran sweater. I find Arran great to knit with and the garment doesn't wear out.

Anne I will put a photo on when it's finished.At the moment. I'm juggling knitting and sorting out the garden!

Thanks vera. I know the feeling well. Can't get on with what you want to do for having to do what you have to do.

People have tried to teach me I don;t think I have the nack of it

Erin, are you left handed or right? Can be difficult left handed.

Someone recently told me that for a right handed person to teach a left handed person to knit it is best done facing each other rather than side by side as would be usual.

Don't think it will be much longer than a week before my latest creation is done. Several people can't believe I will wear it.

Vera... mine has also slowed down.

Got another problem Ann ,a few weeks ago I fell and hurt my shoulder.I'm still get shooting pains down my arm right to my finger tips,so knitting is a bit difficult at present.

Sorry to hear that Vera. Hope it will improve with time.
My problem is I am using an old, old obscure pattern. It was ok for quite a while however I am coming across mistakes which makes it hard going. Not going to let knitting get the better of me.

Vera I have finished the knitting. I can't say I am too pleased with it. As I said the pattern was poor. However now that I know I will do it again.

Anne,that's lovely..I would recognise you outdoors anywhere if you wore it..or is it for someone else..whatever,it's lovely.

I would rather you recognise the character. However I won't be wearing this one. Not up to standard. When I have had another go then I will wear it.

Just to mix hobbies with history section - although I was taught to knit very young I well remember knitting in Miss Philips class at Bickershaw colliery school about 1957/8

Other than being shown how to cast on and off by my mother ( herself a superb knitter) I learned simply by watching her.

Jazzy do you remember knitting a small purse with a long shoulder strap?.
Also re school there is a brilliant photo on Album Schools headed 'Abram' colliery school of the top class with Miss Goodwin and Mr Price - are you in that photo, would be about 1961'ish

Beryl, my sister and I have had many discussions about that photo! You do look familiar, but I can't place you, sorry.

It's hard to say, but I think that it may be me, on the same row as you, but first on the left. Not identified to date. The hair doesn't look dark enough, which is what makes me unsure.

I don't remember being in the same class as Tom Jackson, who posted the pic, but I think I was in the top class for 2 years. But my mother and Toms mother were great friends, so it's strange I don't remember.

I was definitely in the same class as some of the others, including Elizabeth Wolsey, who is to the right of the person I think might be me.

I am the middle of three sisters, Pat is the oldest, I'm Jennifer, my younger sister is Marilyn. We lived on Bickershaw Lane, next to Marie Clark who used to watch over the kids at lunchtime. Next to Miss Clark lived the Skieths, then it was the side street then it was the school

I lived in Belmont Avenue which would then have been part of the new small estate. I was friends with Gwen Smith and Sheila Appleton if that helps. Also I am the eldest of two girls my sister Pauline being the younger We used to attend the Methodist Chapel over the bridge
I can remember names and faces but can't always put them together

My memory is shocking, beryl. I remember Gwen and Sheila's names, but I'm not sure I would recognise them.

My mate was Susan Hornby though she went to the Grammar School, so I had different mates at school.

Susan married Edwin Hodson (?) out of Rivington Drive.

Yes I do remember Susan Hornby. When I left that school I went to Ashton Central school and a short while after my parents relocated to Bryngates so lost touch with most people from junior school except for Gwen and Sheila.

Aha, that's why I don't remember you from secondary school. I know I should know Gwen and Sheila, it's just sort of on the edge of my memory, but can't quite catch it.

So very annoying!

Was Susan Hornby the brother of Jimmy who used to play for Wigan?? I think she has a shop in Abram at some stage. It was up Kingsdown Road.

broady, I know Jimmy, he used to live 2 doors away from me. But I can't remember if he was Susan's brother or cousin.

As well as the Hornby family who lived in Belmont, there was the Hornby family who lived in St James Crescent.

Their daughter Carol (Susan's cousin) had the shop at the corner of Bolton House Road and Bickershaw Lane. Jimmy might be her brother.

Susan and Edwin did have a shop at one time, in Leigh I think, but that was about 40 years ago, they lived in Lowton then. I don't remember her having a shop in Abram, but entirely possible. I haven't lived in Wigan since 1986, so I'm not very up to date!

My wife Margaret who does a lot of knitting would like to know where can she obtain knitting patterns for clothes for a 7" teddy bear or pattern for 7" dolls she is pulling her hair after trying all the places she can think of,would be obliged.

Lots of dolls and teddys to knit as well as dolls and teddys clothes. As the title says many are of the forties, fifties and before that. Good service too.

golden bear, there is a stall in Wigan Market Hall where they have everything you need for knitting. There must be loads of people knitting because the stall is so big. I used to knit everything when my kids were little but I have not done it for years but you get so much pleasure when you have completed a garment.

Hello ANNE thank you for telling her about google we are going to have a sken has they say (look) at the time of this post she has just completed two baby hippo's ,iv'e praised her but I don't think she believes me I don't knw why for they are good her next task is a penguin she's trying , I apologise I have tried to upload photo and just cant get the hang of it.
