Computers

Started by: PeterP (11291)

I have had computers for many years but the truth is I only know the basics. I have always wanted to learn more. In the past night schools used to run courses about using basic computing. Do any of these classes still exist? I would like to sign up for a course which runs for 1or 2 hrs but no longer due to home commitments.

Look if WEA are still offering such.

But clarify exactly what you want from the course.

I have known many who have been disappointed, finding themselves on courses not suited to their needs.

You will find lots of courses online also.

But assessing their quality is quite challenging.

You may find the library a useful source of information concerning what courses are to be had. But, I guess that for a little while, they are all crushed by Covid restrictions.

Do check them out though.

Twenty years back, I spent £90 on a Web authoring course recommended by the library, and it was utter crap!
(Totally dependent on MS 'Frontpage', which Microsoft soon pulled)

Any local computer clubs? They might know of classes.

PS Have you done a Google search?

Adult Classes+computer+localities you wish to consider?

And maybe repeat search when classes pick up again after hiatus of Covid restrictions.

Annoying, ain't it.

Forever meeting people, and struggling to remember their names. Sometimes even people that I know well.

Be on the tip of my tongue, but no. it evades me.

Madeleine, who is a very knowledgeable and helpful contributor got back to me with some suggestions.

Two are on Youtube:

Basic Computer Skills - Orientation

and

Windows 10 Beginners Guide

and she went on to add:

"It might be better to just get a book. Here are some the web recommends.

Computer Basics Absolute Beginner's Guide, Windows 10 Edition £4.66

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Computer-Absolute-Beginners-Windows-Content/dp/0789754517

Computers For Seniors For Dummies Paperback £4.72

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Computers-Seniors-Dummies-Nancy-Muir/dp/1119049555

Alternatively if you have a good printer I have listed the link to download “Computers For Seniors”

Below.

(The PDF is 21MB and 435 pages.

https://ulozto.net/file/56WvZFsuP/c...2AwZ2BTD1LGHjAmHkZwuvMyO1p0MyJzgTnGyvJQMxAt==

Use the slow download, it should take less than a minute."

She further suggested: "If he doesn't mind paying, Lynda.com have courses like how to use Microsoft Office. They even give you a certificate when you finish. For a small price he can take as many courses as he wants with just one payment."

Madeleine's suggestions have usually been sound and reliable in the past. Hope they are of some help.

Charity shops are good for books of the type she has mentioned.

HI PETERP / 'A number of years ago i enrolled on the basic computer course at my daughter's senior school which was a Mornington Road High School , I really enjoyed it. I got used to Word/Excel / Powerpoint /etc but have to admit if you don't use it regular it fades away a bit ,but it may be worth your while to check out some schools depending were you live .
All the best bud ! G.B.
