ventilation shafts

When travelling along the A580 East lancs going toward Manchester. You drive past Atherleigh way and in the fields on your left are what appear to be ventilation shafts with a brick surround. What are these shafts for

There's concrete ones along the Lancs, they are the water main from Bury to Prescot.

This is one off Millfield Lane!
And here's another one off Liverpool Road!

the big head is right again pipe manhole covers, that in Millfield Lane is exactly where they had to bypass for a time as they found old footings in the field, with it being across from the estate they opened an Historic dig to find out more before cutting through with the pipe, do you know if they found anything of interest
