My school was Gidlow Secondary Modern - I was there from 1965 to 1969.
Our houses were Raleigh, Gordon, Scott and Nelson. There was a chart for each where stars were stuck on for good conduct, performance, etc.
The highlight for me was playing football for Raleigh against Nelson (who were a good team). we were losing 4-3 and I was on the wing, dribbled past 2 players on the wing and cut in past 2 defenders and scored the winner! I can still picture the event...

JR:

I too went to Gidlow Girls' School and initially our houses were also Raleigh, Nelson, Gordon and Scott. I was in Gordon House and our badges were green. Raleigh was yellow, Nelson was blue and Scott was red.

However, before I left, it was decided that there would be just three houses, named after predominant women and they were Kathleen Ferrier (Classical Singer), Helen Keller (Blind & Deaf Author and Activist) and Marie Curie (Physicist & Chemist). I was in Marie Curie House and our badge was turquoise, Ferrier was purple, and I think Keller was yellow.

The worse part of being in a house was coming up to sports day, the House prefects would pursue to to make us sign up for different events - I hated sports, never really much good at them

Molly M - I remember someone telling me she was in Hellen Keller house.
Although we shared the same hall, the boys and girls were kept strictly separate. There was a line painted on the school yard to define the limited areas for each gender. Our football often would go into the girls' area and as it was forbidden to enter we would have to politely ask for the ball back. Some mischievous girls would keep hold of the ball and tease us saying " Come and get it then!" I often went to retrieve a ball and was either caught by the teacher on playground duty or reported by one of the nasty snitching prefects. That always meant at least one painful stroke of the cane on my backside! I'm not sure how the girls were punished, if at all there were!

JR: LOL! Yes, we were kept strictly apart, but it's the way things were back then.

I think the houses changed to female names in or around 1964.

I was definitely NOT one of those nasty girls because as you were starting in 1965 I was leaving, and my brother was just one year behind me, so you wouldn't have known him either but, trust me, those girls would have been punished as well as the teachers were just as strict as the boys' teachers.

Whilst there I, like many others, hated school; but now thinking back, we were given a good education and we had a varied curriculum. However, I was hopeless at maths, but I excelled in English comprehension and French, for which I have been very grateful and has kept me in work for the last 55 years.

Mollie, it is good that you excelled at certain subjects and found a favourable career. I hated school too; unfortunately I was a daydreamer and was largely uninspired. But I excelled at art, technical drawing, physics, geography and was a decent long distance runner, so enjoyed sports too. I left at 15 and soon realised that I needed qualifications to get anywhere, so I started to do evening classes to get A levels and professional qualifications. So I did ok and became a landscape designer, consultant and historian. I did my degree late, part time over 5 years (along with full time work) and graduated when I was 50.
Contrary to popular belief, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

At Blessed John Rigby Grammar School for Boys [as it was then], the houses were Campion, Finch, Southworth and Arrowsmith. House rugby games weren't for the faint-hearted!
