Weather watching

Started by: britboy (6794)

Bought one of these LINK a couple of weeks ago after my old unit died after a few years in service.
Nice big display and appears to be quite accurate, I can see the numbers from across the room which is good for me with ageing eye sight.

Winter weather watching here is important because of rapidly changing conditions and lots of snow.

We used to get a good weather forecast in Grasmere.

If you can see the hill, it's going to rain.

If you can't see the hill, it's raining!

The autumn season has quickly appeared over the last week, this morning it is 50F/10C... The leaves are showing colour change and will soon enough in a glorious seasonal show.
This usually only lasts a couple of weeks before the trees are bare.

Then it's 4-5 months of winter snow...if you done like snow you done live here... cabin fever will peek at the end of April, fortunately the snow will be almost gone then and natures cycle wil start again with a flurry of spring growth.

Season here, also seems to be changing quickly. One day unbearably hot, the next day quite cold. Not seeing much of the sort of pleasant to work in, comfortable, moderate weather.

Gale warning ...wind of change...we did have 15-20 waves the other day, unfortunately the week end warriors got caught up in it kayaking and had to be rescued with the coast guard helicopter, I'm convinced that they don't check the national weather forecast before their trip or they can't read.

We had the most ferocious thunder storm that I have ever witnessed in my life last night or early this morning I should say...6.45am...it was a monster thunder cell, continual lightening, very high winds and torrential rain all just before daylight, a tree blew down and just missed my caravan :-o
Our dogs jumped up on our bed and stayed close...then a power outage to top it all. Left home at 10am and power was still out...oh well...off to watch Loreena McKennitt live Tuesday night...waiting over 4 months to visit the theatre.

The snow didn't stick but 20 miles south of us there was quite a covering. We stay degrees warmer with the help of Lake Superior, inland away from the influence of the lake it can be15-20 degrees colder .

the ground is still to warm so nothing will stick yet and I've millions of maple leaves to rake before they get covered with snow!

I used to love walking through the woods and the smell of fallen leaves...You do rake and not blow the leaves, right? I hate on a lovely peaceful day, then someone comes out with the blower to blow the leaves, instead of raking them..

I rake most of the time, gets a bit of exercise in, I rake into piles then pull each pile onto a 10x10 tarp, pull the tarp into the woods and dump the leaves.
Could have over 30 large piles to get rid of...don't mine doing it, out in the fresh air which is about 41F at the moment and a gale blowing.
The maples offer a big canopy of shade in summer.

POTENT LATE FALL STORM TO IMPACT UPPER MICHIGAN THIS WEEKEND

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL MOVE NORTHEAST ACROSS WESTERN UPPER
MICHIGAN LATE ON FRIDAY AND INTO SOUTHEAST CANADA ON SATURDAY.
NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS THAT WILL GUST AS HIGH AS 50 TO 55 MPH NEAR
LAKE SUPERIOR AND TO NEAR 45 MPH OVER THE SOUTH CENTRAL IN ITS WAKE
WILL DRAW MUCH COLDER AIR INTO THE UPPER LAKES ON FRIDAY NIGHT

CAUSING RAIN THAT WILL FALL AHEAD OF THE LOW PRESSURE TO CHANGE TO
SNOW. EXPECT AS MUCH AS 3 TO 5 INCHES OF SNOW TO ACCUMULATE OVER THE
HIGHER TERRAIN OF NORTH CENTRAL AND WESTERN UPPER MICHIGAN FRIDAY
NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT. THE GUSTY WINDS WILL ALSO RESULT IN
SOME BLOWING SNOW. ANY SNOW ACCUMULATION OVER THE SOUTH CENTRAL FROM
IRON MOUNTAIN TO ESCANABA AND MENOMINEE WILL BE LESS THAN AN INCH.

THE STRONG NORTHWEST WINDS ACROSS LAKE SUPERIOR WILL ALSO WHIP UP
WAVES AS HIGH AS 15 TO 20 FEET FROM THE TIP OF THE KEWEENAW
PENINSULA TO SHORELINE AREAS EAST OF MARQUETTE TO WHITEFISH POINT.
THESE WAVES COULD CAUSE SOME LAKESHORE FLOODING AND SIGNIFICANT
BEACH EROSION FROM LATE FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY NIGHT.

THOSE WITH OUTDOOR INTERESTS OR PLANNING TRAVEL ACROSS UPPER
MICHIGAN THIS WEEKEND SHOULD STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR
OTHER MEDIA OUTLETS FOR FURTHER UPDATES AND STATEMENTS ON THIS
DEVELOPING STORM SYSTEM.

We went out last night, went to to a friends place( not for too long, as I am still suffering dizziness, like motion sickness from my cataract surgery), it was held outdoors with fire pits and heaters.. But it was great, everyone wrapped up, but having a great time, lots of music, food and drink, only I couldn't drink,or I would have been flat on my face.. Not a good look for a lady of my age.

Well... March may go out like a lion although it has just over a week to change to a lamb.
It's been a week of mostly above freezing temps and into our third instant thaw, a lot of the snow has melted excepted for the high ploughed banks.

There's a 24hr gale warning with gusts up the 50mph and 20ft waves on Lake Superior, I can garuntee that the surf boarders will take advantage if they can find open water.

The winter has been dominated with high winds and windchill temps of -19F, very dangerous to be out in the heat stripping temps.

But it's officially spring and can only hope that Mother Nature gives us all a break!

The consolation...no climbing on the house roof this winter
