For any top class football club to concede three goals in the space of five minutes of added time and lose what was a match winning lead in a cup tie is ridiculous.

And how anyone can gloat that a British club lost on the verge of getting into a final is beyond rational thinking, especially when living on past memories of greatness!

The bitter has beens have won nothing of note for a decade now and fortunately they won't be embarrassing themselves and the country again in Europe next season (unless they qualify for the conference).

It's left to the two real football powerhouses in the North West to fly the flag in the latter stages of the european "knockout" trophy (as well as The Premier League). Even though The English Champions have been knocked out.

Go get that knockout trophy Liverpool!

I genuinely hope you win it, it will really annoy the trafford bitters.

Don you are saying City are a better team than Real Madrid than are you I would have preferred to have played City than them look what happened a few weeks ago at Wembley. Real are a different kettle of fish and harder to beat like you found last night.

Replied: 5th May 2022 at 11:14

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. We were much the better team over both legs and shot ourselves in the foot. Such is life.

At Wembley you played a weakened team who were also battered after the battle of Atletico a few days before. As the second half progressed we took control. If the game was ten minutes longer you would have lost.

Real are a shadow of their former selves and City should have finished them off in both legs but they don't know when they are beaten (fair play to them). We had a ridiculously weakened back line in the first leg and that is why they managed three goals. Yesterday there were no excuses apart from complacency. If you aren't as complacent as we were you will absolutely maul them.

At times, I just cannot understand such animosity. For me, I am extremely disappointed in Manchester City not reaching the final and extremely delighted in Liverpool reaching the final. I certainly wanted to see a final of two English teams competing for the Cup.
I cannot agree with some of the things that have been said. I do not believe that Liverpool are feeling relieved that they aren't facing Man City in the final. Neither are they feeling relieved that they are going to be facing Real Madrid. Jürgen Klopp and the Liverpool players know what they have to do and they aren't naive nonentities; relief doesn't come into it!
With regard to yesterday's match and which team was the best, it is down to personal opinion and, if you wish, the end result. Man City looked exceptionally good at times and certainly dominated the game during these periods. Sadly, City failed to do what England have failed to do on many occasions, and that is to stick that ball into the back of the net. City had their chances and should have had that ball in the back of the net a number of times. Those two disastrous minutes should have never ocurred and it wasn't due to Real Madrid's players being the best on the pitch, it was due to Man City's players losing concentration and releasing the pressure that they had been applying.
Additionally, and I feel I need to say this, the referee wasn't a help and did no favours for City. Real Madrid's players were up to their usual tricks - like many teams from these parts of Europe - of falling down or diving and rolling in agony trying to get a penalty etc. Many times they succeeded in gaining this advantage and also frustrated the opposition. Sometimes they didn't reap any rewards with their Hollywood acting etc. But, the referee didn't produce the 'Yellow Card' for such behaviour, which is now a rule to try and stop this kind of play. I also saw some of the antics of some of the Real Madrid's players and this is to harass the referee, especially over decisions which hadn't gone their way; this is to place pressure on the referee and possibly some fear. At the end of the first half, some Real Madrid players had surrounded the referee and were strongly complaining about certain decisions. Stupidly, the referee didn't put his foot down and warn them, even to the point of showing a yellow card - which can be shown even at the time.
I am deeply hoping that Liverpool easily beat Real Madrid - 5:0 would be a nice result. Although, I cannot see this happening, but I feel quite sure that Liverpool will pull it off. I will also be behind Liverpool all the way!

Liverpool are a fighting team, we have seen this on many occasions, and Jürgen Klopp is a credit to this. He has great character, a great attitude and a fighting spirit.
I remember watching that match were Liverpool had been written off at half-time: I believe they were losing 3:0 and the commentators were predicting a 5:0 or more as an end result. But, by the sixtieth minute the game had certainly changed - and we know how the match ended.

I am am understandably disappointed that The Champions went out in the manner they did and that we will not have a trip to the Stade de France.

However prestigious the european knockout trophy is perceived, it is exactly that, a knockout lottery.

I will be far more disappointed if we don't win the Premier League having attended the majority of those games come rain, shine or snow.

The Premier League is the test of true champions and if Liverpool win that too they will be very worthy champions.

Hopefully they will make it 7 EKT's and still 1 Premier League, but who knows!

As I said when I first typed on this particular thread: 'At times, I just cannot understand such animosity.'

I really cannot understand why a person (and I assume the person is English) would type: 'Well done Madrid'
For me, the only reason to type those words would be down to being a Madrid fan or Spanish - under these circumstances.
I am certainly not happy that Real Madrid won and especially under the circumstances.
So, I may need to ask this question: Tiger cat, why did you type those words and ended it with a grinning 'Smiley'?

Also, why was this question typed: 'and wot did you think after 120 mins ?'
In my second sentence of my first post to this thread, I typed: 'For me, I am extremely disappointed in Manchester City not reaching the final...'
It is clearly obvious what I was thinking and how I was feeling. I also felt frustrated and quite sad at Man City's lack of keeping up the pressure and the quality play that had been shown so many times during that match.

I would have preferred a Manchester City vs Liverpool final.
For one, it would have been two English teams.
Next, I would have felt that there would have been a fairer match; less diving and rolling around, less complaining to the referee etc.
It would have also been a strong positiveness for English soccer (although, many players aren't English) and a possible motivation for the England team.
It would have also shown the rest of Europe and possibly the World that we (English soccer and English teams/England) are back with strength. Although we didn't win any of the two Cups, we were there in 2018 and 2021, and we certainly made our mark. I watched some of those matches in other countries and I heard a lot of positive remarks about the England team - those remarks came from people who were not English; not even British.
I watched the England vs Germany match on Majorca and I was surrounded by Germans, which wasn't a problem as they were friendly and courteous. Before the kick-off, I told them, in a friendly way, that Germany had no chance of winning and I gave many reasons. After the match, many of them stayed chatting to me and told me that England was the far better team and deserved to win. They also wished the best for England and hoped that England would win the Cup.

So, why are there words being typed to support Real Madrid and words to condemn Liverpool?

Are we not all English and lovers of the game?

I definitely want Liverpool to win and the more goals they score, the better!

Also, I really hope that the referee is from a country where they play physical soccer. I hope that the referee isn't going to blow the whistle every minute of the match. I also hope that the referee won't be fooled by the antics of certain (Real Madrid) players and the 'Hollywood acting'. I have the feeling that some Liverpool players - and we know which players, are going to face a lot of grief (pulling shirts, cutting/chopping down, dangerous tackles, off the camera remarks et al) from some of the Real Madrid players. Real Madrid players are going to set out to annoy and frustrate the Liverpool players, possibly even out to cause some injuries and Yellow/Red Cards.

Good luck! Liverpool.

So, with regards to your words, you are a Real Madrid supporter.

Of course, every person is free to support any team he or she wishes, especially in our English society.

By the way, the adjective 'long-winded' is used to express an individual's opinion of something they have seen or heard and it is commonly used to express a negative opinion. It is possible, some people think in a totally different way to you.

Had it been say Bolton or Preston or whoever you consider to be Latics rivals in one of those European Semis last night bluesfan would you have been as keen to see them reach the final?

The game of football is indeed full of tribalism, but when it is a case of a British club against a foreign club, you support the British club irrespective of which British club it is.

If it had been United against Real Madrid, I would have been supporting United even though where domestic football is concerned, I am not a supporter of them.

Perhaps you should be preaching that to the fans of the clubs who still 60 years after the event sing songs about an air crash that decimated a "British club" who had been playing a "foreign club" then instead of having your nose put out of joint because a few fans on here find it funny that another club got knocked out of a European competition in highly amusing circumstances.

I really rate Klopp, and bet that City and United wish he was at the helm at their Clubs. Records are made to be broken and if Liverpool win all 4, it couldn't happen to a nicer chap. As it stands, we've got the League run in on a knife edge and a couple of finals that could go either way. In a footballing sense, what's not to like !!

WN1 Standisher, you have as much right as anyone else and, after reading those words you posted above the's words of mine, possibly more to contribute than certain others.

Jürgen Kopp is a nice bloke and not only is he respected by many, he is extremely well liked.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish him and the Liverpool team the very best and really hope that they bring that Cup back to England.

..but i'm rather sad that it's not only an All England final, it's not an all NW Final which would really have sent out a message of where the power..

No need to feel too sad, the only connection the clubs have got to the NW these days is that is where the stadiums happen to be, the owners/managers and 98% of the players aren't from this country so certainly not a region of it.

So, you are under the illusion that I am making the whole thing up. We (members of the family) have sat together and watched many matches and have discussed them in a way that you seem unable to do, without prejudice and without bias.
It doesn't matter if you have seen it first hand or any other way. What matters is the type of person you are and the type of people you are with.
To introduce you to the concerning issues of our world and how we perceive it, we need to recognise the following:
A racist is more comfortable with people who are of similar character and this allows that particular racist and the similar minded people to feel stronger and to project the image of superiority and therefore a self-indulgent glorification of dismissing other cultures as lesser human beings.

Chatty, it is what I slipped into my typing. The top teams are now international teams due to having players from all over the world. But, we try not to shout this fact out from the top of the stadiums.
Probably, one of the craziest things is, a foreign player is glorified when playing for 'our' club, but criticised when playing for their country.

Perhaps the problem at Old Trafford is that the club has not got the right blend of British and Foreign players like Liverpool and Manchester City and also had when Alex Ferguson was Manager.

As Ian Wright said after a game where Liverpool easily beat United, both clubs have good players, but the difference is that at Liverpool, they play as a team whereas at United they play as individuals.

Thanks IanP and Chatty. Kind words. It's true that when club's get bought by over sea's investment, a bit of the club's identity changes. The fan's are happy to go along with the security and potential success the new dollar brings and quite right too. If, like what happened to us, you get an owner who's intentions aren't what it says on the tin, then it all falls apart, badly. Big money investment is good and can take you to places you've never dreamed of, but have it pulled from under you and it's a very long way down. I think United have a massive job to get back to anywhere near where they were. This is also fueled by expectation. They were so good for so long, the benchmark, that anything less is un acceptable. I think its the old " you never miss your water ... " with SAF, he was that good and they've struggled to replace him. City, the ' noisy neigbours ' on the other hand have a great Manager, a squad to rival any in the World and can win any competition they are in. When they finally bag the CL Cup, then they'll feel it's job done. All I'll say to them is don't forget where you came from, before the bank book rode into town. Success comes in cycles and it's prudent to remember you'll not always be the big dog, whoever you are. Enjoy it whilst it's there !!

In the 1999 C L final in Barcelona v Bayern utd started the game with 4 home grown players.
They had 3 more on the bench .
Seven home grown players involved .
In 2008 they had two who started and 3 on the bench.
Perhaps this is one reason why the berties have never won the C L .
One single home grown player involved .
Or was the tie lost in the first leg in M C when Carlo out thought Guardiola..?

My daughters friend from work and her son, season ticket holders, got to the ground two hours before kick of and got on the ground after half time with genuine tickets. The worst part was coming away from the ground and gangs of French were attacking and robbing people while the police watched! She also told of a man being sprayed and having an allergic reaction and being hospitalised.
I have seen the tv pictures and my response is that FIFA and the French authorities need investigating,as no football fan should have to put up with that.

Just a general comment about what I heard on Talksport is that a lot of fake tickets were held by french people.
And in all my years as a season ticket holder at the latics, the only time I ever considered myself to be in danger was the day United won the premier league at Wigan when I was nearly knocked over by their fans who broke in just as I was leaving the ground.
They definitely didn't have tickets!!

The behavior of many football fan's, especially when playing away makes you wonder if that it the reason why some main Police stations like for example, the one's at Wigan and nearby Bolton are now situated at Robin Park and Middlebrook.

And in some places, where the main Police stations are still in the town and city centres, new sub stations have again been built near football stadiums.

An observation I have noticed while travelling all over England!

And to think that years ago, you could go to a football game, stand anywhere with rival fan's and with no trouble and bad atmosphere like there is at many games today.

No wonder, many people now prefer to watch other sports and just watch football on television.

You are indeed correct about Rugby League in the 70's and 80's as I also encountered on occasions at games on both sides of the Pennines, but it was also during the time that there was the massive amount of football hooligan behavior and violence, which sadly spread to some Rugby League games, especially at Warrington.

Attended the funeral of a family friend on Saturday afternoon just off the Champs Elysees, Paris. Plenty Liverpool fans mulling around, all respectful and well behaved, as were the Real Madrid fans.

On the flight back on Monday night I was listening to a group of scousers talking between themselves, matter of factly about the events at the SDF. One said that out of their party of 16 (including kids and women) all had either been attacked by locals or sprayed by the police.

Now, I am the last person to defend Liverpool fans but these were not trying to garner sympathy to outsiders and seemed respectable middle aged supporters.

No doubt there were scallies present at the game.......but every club has scallies.
